Excellent and verisital but not overly complicated. User freindly and well designed.

This is a great unit. Very smooth and quiet in operation and not overly complicated to use.
Sound quality is great as well as the picture quality. I like the idea that it has the standard RCA style 5.1 Surround Sound outputs for those who have older receivers which don't have the digital inputs or the decoders.
It is just as a lot of other people have said a little slower to load up a disc but it really isn't a horribly long time just not what most people are used to. Just power it up and let it go through the motions and all will be good. One thing to note if your entertainment center is a little short on space. This unit is pretty deep like a higher quality receiver usually is so keep that in mind if you have a wire way between shelves or doors on the front you keep closed when not in use.
I have wanted a decent Blue Ray player for a while now because I like the fact they still play regular DVD's as well but I also am-going to start adding Blue Ray discs to my collection. All in all this is a great unit and I am very satisfied with it.

Not bad for under $30, but spend $100+ if you want one with netflix.

For the money, you can't beat this bluray player. No it doesn't have all the great features of the newer models, like netflix, wifi access, etc., but it's a great player for the money. When I bought this unit (late 2012) I noticed it took 1-2 minutes to boot up (turn on) and then another minute or 2 to load a disk. I hit up google to see why this was and found out you can update the software on the device. It was very easy to do. Just go to sony's website and download the update file, burn it to a disk, then put the disk in the player. It really was that simple. The device now has more features like better audio and the load times where cut in half.Read full review...

remote battery cover not correct

This unit works well, however the battery compartment cover didn't fit the remote. After a bit of trimming, I got it to nest properly, but the latch didn't fit the base. I'll just tape it with some scotch tape and be happy.
Hey, the price was right, and I can live with the misfit on the remote.

Great Bluray, great price

This outputs a beautiful picture and is one of Sony's cheapest Bluray players.

All Bluray players take awhile to load the content from the discs because of the huge amount of data on each disc. This player seems very slow, but you have to keep in mind that all the other Bluray players are slow at this, too. When I say slow, I mean it takes 10-20 seconds. It also takes longer than I would like just to turn on (maybe 20-30 seconds or longer if there is a disc already in the drive). It just takes some getting used to the difference in load-time between BluRay Discs and standard DVDs.

I use a lot of Sony equipment (LCD TV, Receiver, Bluray player) and it was very easy to configure Sony TV's remote to control all of the devices with Sony's BraviaSync. When I turn on the TV, the receiver comes on automatically and changes to the correct input. When I turn on the Bluray player, the TV and receiver also turn on, and change to the correct inputs needed to watch (and hear) the BluRay player.

Sony does an excellent job of making it's equipment work together, which is one of the nicest features of Sony stuff.

In fact, I saved a lot of money on this BluRay player because I bought it used on eBay without a remote for about 1/4th of the going price simply because it was missing the remote. The Sony receiver and Sony TV remotes I have work fine for controlling this BluRay player, so I really did not need the remote that originally came with it. Because of this, I can not advise you on the original remote's features or shortcomings, since I've never used it.

This is a no-frills BluRay player. It does not have an ethernet port therefore it does not have features like NetFlix streaming. This is not a problem for me since my TV, XBox360 and Media PC all have the ability to stream NetFlix movies. It does not have the ability to update the firmware over the network either, but you can use a PC or Mac to burn a CD/DVD with the most recent firmware update and easily update the player's firmware by playing the disc.

I use HDMI cables to connect the BluRay to the receiver (or directly to the TV) and hook up could not be any easier. I strongly suggest buying HDMI cables on eBay for a few bucks instead of at brick and mortar electronics stores or Wal-Mart, where HDMI cables cost $30-$60 each (total ripoff!) Don't believe the salesmen's lies about their HDMI cables being better, they are no different at all.

All in all, I highly recommend this device.

Good product

This player is good quality and has high-end video and audio capabilities and easy to use. The only downside is powering-on and initial loading speed is very slow. Other than that it is a fine player. Read full review...

Great player and great price

Terrific quality, especially for audio, where it performs as well as any audiophile CD player. I compared this to my Krell 280CD that I sold on eBay for $1,300 and it sounded just as good. Great DAC. Very well built and a reliable performer. Keep in mind that this is an older player and so it will be very slow in its initial setup, compared to newer units. Expect to wait for 30 seconds or more when you load something. If you can live with that, then this is absolutely the best audio/video player that your money can buy.Read full review...

Blu Ray bliss.

Once receiving the player I went through the normal boring process of placing the player in its new home. Once there I attatched the various cables that would be used cardas audio cables were the order for sound as well as a dedicated a dedicated HDMI cable 2.5 meter. All is well when the poor sap that I am I never thought to look in the back to see if sony made provision for the consumer to have the option of using their own preferred power cable. Not gonna happen here! I was a bit miffed at that but decided not to curse the player just yet! Besides the said power cable could be used for something else on down the road right? Right! So all is forgivin. After averting a potential geek fit I plugged in the player and she whirrled to life spit open her tray and was ready for a good time. In goes Master and Commander I wanted this first because it's a challenging DVD. Lots of dark colors blacks etc. With some adjustments it was spot on. Iron man was next FAB!!! Great Job Sony :-) of course you'll have to tweak your set to get all that 1080p goodness but it's worth it. I recommend this product if you really enjoy the home theater experience. Sony should make provisions for allowing the consumer to use custom power cables. Other than that it's a sweet deal!Read full review...

Really good value

It's really compatible with my audio system, having RCA outputs. Appears to be heavier and well built than other blu ray players. Paid 69.75 for a new player in the box.
