Should get 5 stars but editing ruined the end

When I first saw "Rustler's Rhapsody" some 20 years ago, I loved the movie, a clever Western spoof with tons of charm, wit, and clever gags. This is not a manic, "Airplane"-type, gag-a-minute spoof. The satire is driven by character and is at times very subtle, such as when angry townfolk surround the hero to berate him for running out on a fight, calling him a "libertine" and a "free-thinker." Rustler's Rhapsody has some terrific moments, and I thought it was hilarious. HOWEVER... the version of this film making the rounds now was edited with a meat cleaver. In particular, the ending was inexplicably changed, and one of the funniest scenes removed. For those of you familiar with the film, it is the scene where Rex, the singing cowboy hero, disappears behind a rock to resolve his problem with "confident heterosexuality" with the barmaid. I say inexplicably because there was nothing graphic about the scene. The scene was critical to the film's resolution, not to mention very funny, and the fact that it was removed nearly ruined the movie for me. Other scenes from the flick have also been removed and/or altered, seemingly to appease conservatives (for example, scenes involving some sort of psychedelic "root" the cowboys found remain in the film, but have been watered down). If I could find the original version of the film I would buy it immediately, but not this watered-down version.Read full review...

Best Comedy Western ever !

One of the Funniest Spoofs of the 1950’s Western Movies ... Gentle “Adult” humor gets some really good laughs with a storyline that is thoroughly entertaining! Will become one of your Favorites!

...Root's kickin in...

A quite often forgotten comedy that came out in the early 80's. I particularly remember this movie, because I was managing a six-plex movie theatre during college, and this was one of the demo movies that the Surround Sound Installers had included on the test real.

Good and fun, and in particular, clean western comedy. Primarily a spoof of the B-Westerns that were produced in the thirties, forties, and fifties. Tom Berenger and several other 80's regular actors, I can not remember all the names, and also stars Andy Griffith and Fernando Ray as bumbling bad guys.

Simple parody fun.

Had seen this movie years ago and wanted to share with someone else. Good cast, great fun, worth a watch. Better than a lot of the sludge coming out of H'wood now.

Super movie

Very witty spoof on old westerns. I grew up in the 1950s with Roy Rogers on television. This movie completely captures the spirit of those old westerns. Super funny. Great cast

Old time favorite

Love this movie. My parents had it on VHS and it was my mom's favorite movie. Since she was visiting me from the islands, I figured I would surprise her. I can't wait!

All Time Greats!

This works well as a "parody" film... or just a good adult humor western.
I watched hundreds of times as a kid and just loved it as a western. It wasn't until I watched as an adult that I realized what a great comedy movie it is. Berenger is great and John Wayne's son delivers the best guest starring role of his career. This movie is what movies like "scary movie" and "epic movie" are supposed to be... If you like Blazing Saddles, Fear of a Black Hat, Not Another Teen Movie... you will love this filmRead full review...

Great hard to find film!

Tom Berenger is great in this spoof of old westerns. Andy Griffith plays the Rich Cattle Baron, and the real surprise is the part played by Patrick Wayne...John Wayne's son. I recommend it as a fun family oriented movie, since most young people have never seen the old westerns we watched growing up.Read full review...

one of TOP 100 all-time greats

You may not agree, based on your sense of humor, But this 1985 classic western comedy makes fun of every western and is one of the BEST westerns ever made. There is a good guy, a bad guy, a side-kick, a girl and an all-star cast of hundreds. "It's the good guy! And he's STANDING in the saddle!" Hope I am not ruining it, but in the end all the bad guys are defeated in a huge gun battle!! Of course, the good guy only shoots the guns out of the bad guy's hands(usually, unless he misses ;-) ) And of course you don't expect to find the good guy in his underwear at his camp with a bunch of girls having 'Root'! You'll enjoy dancing horses, fancy shooting, sheep herders and cattlemen.. and when all hope is lost- the GOOD GUYS WIN! This movie is sure to win a home in your classics collection that you will watch over and over again..
