A Radio Receiver Course For Hobbyists, and Future Engineers and Technicians

This kit has everything you need to know how to build and learn how a ordinary AM-FM receiver works. It takes up to 3 hours to a day to build this whole kit. It's best that you keep your work space organized when assembling and testing this kit. It also requires a digital multimeter, oscilloscope, and a RF signal generator according to the instructions, and a ESD safe soldering iron, hand tools, and solder.

First it starts off with building the audio amplifier and also the transistor audio board, and then the 2nd lesson takes you to the AM receiver kit such as different stages, and then the last project is the FM receiver circuit. How I assembled it was carefully installed the passive components and then went back and installed the semi conductors since semi conductors are sensitive around heat, but I did study carefully the instructions before and after building the kit.

The AM receiver performs like a AM DX tuner when aligned properly and you follow the instructions carefully, such as following the right alignment proceedures. Same goes for the FM receiver which requires paying attention to the special alignment proceedures and tuning techniques.

I once did an experiment with the AM tuner circuit and changed in and out the inductor from from a 175 turn AM coil to a 7 turn coil on a ferrite rod, and I was able to tune the 60 meter and 49 meter band and heard short wave radio stations, it still needed a decent long wire antenna, but experiment with that last after you master the AM and FM radio receiver course. This course is very important when preparing to take a real radio electronics course and also to help you learn the ins and outs of a radio receiver that will help you do better in your ham radio and electronics engineering exams and this course will help you get your first ham ticket or that FCC radio telephone license or help you pass that ASVAB test for to get into the field of electronics in the military.

I should of done this long ago, now I know about the how a radio receiver works and why IC's, transistors, diodes, capacitors, resistors, etc make it so easy to build a receiver or transmitter or both.

Am/fm radio kit

I got all the components on the board. A few resistors were missing, so I ended up digging through my components and found the right parts to finish up the board. All I have to do is align both receivers. In all, the kit was ok. The manual jumps around a lot, but I'm used to building kits, so I will make it work when I have time!!! I would recommend to a beginner because all theory is very well explained.
Good kit overall!!!

Essential kit for your electronics knowledge

This kit is very internal about teaching someone how an AM FM works on a superheterodyne radio it has been a refresher course for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn AM FM radio operationsRead full review...

Well documented trainer with excellent assembly/workbook.

Excellent trainer. Well written assembly instructions, complete with by section theory of operation and circuit description. Each section is fully tested with excellent demonstration of operation.r>
9V battery holder way too tight regarding battery insertion and removal. The negative terminal pulled out of the holder while removing the battery. Fixed the terminal and Dremel cut the base of the holder - cut about 1/3 off. This gave room for insertion/removal.

The transistor version of the audio output stage has connection headers that are too short, allowing the bottom of the small PCB to come in contact with electrolytic capacitors on the large PCB. I shorted out the PNP power transistor causing it to smoke. It had to be replaced. Put insulating tape on top of the violating capacitors.

These last two comments caused 4 stars instead of 5.Read full review...

Great kit to build an analog AM/FM receiver

This is a great kit to build an AM/FM (mono), totally analog receiver that uses though-hole components. It uses discrete transistors in the RF stages and has two options for the audio amplifier: default IC amplifier or plugable daughter board with discrete transistors. It comes with a complete instructions/training manual that no only explains how to assemble and calibrate the product, but it also provides instruction on soldering as well as a good deal of electronics theory. This is the most complete AM/FM radio kit for anyone interested in radio and electronics. Not suitable for beginners without previous experience with electronic kits unless guided by a knowledgeable person. NOTICE: It does require a signal generator for more accurate calibration.Read full review...

Good lessons on learning AM and FM intricacies.

The kit was easy to put together but some experience with aligning radio circuits is necessary. After all the years of studying radio theory I think it is high time that a kit is developed that will teach the hobbyist/student the ins and outs of phase locked loop and FM stereo. But overall I am happy with the Elenco kits.Read full review...

Best radio kit ever

Bought this to refresh my memory on stuff I learned 30+ years ago. This did that. It’s very informational and educational. Building the circuit on top of the schematic diagram is a brilliant idea.

Lifelong dream

I’ve wanted to build one of these and learn about calibrating AM and FM radios since I was a kid. Finally I’m jumping in with both feet. Can’t wait to take this course and learn all about it.
