Fantastic read that changed my perception of 19th century style writing...

One of the most elegantly written and witty books I have read. A compelling blend of folk tale and classic 19th century literature and given that I am a fan of neither genre, I was all the more amazed to discover that this 782 page brick is one of my top ten novels of all time.

Realistic to the extent that you wished it were reality; funnier than any book ought to have the right to be and imbued with a life of its own that can only be a result of the authors love of every word, sentence and throwaway line committed to the page.

Initially a bit hard to get into, but well worth any initial misgivings.

The kind of book that you superficially hate because you're so jealous of its authors innate talent and the fact that it does eventually have to end.

I would probably consider swapping a few years of my life or a bodily part a fair and decent price in exchange for having written the book...

My only concern is that this review is in danger of setting too high an expectation of the book. Sorry. It's actually rubbish, but buy it anyway...
