A great innovative device that must return to market.

Nothing like this is produced anymore for some reason or if it is it's either too expensive (300$ or more) or not marketed enough. The Alphasmart therefore is a unique and valuable tool.
This thing not only allows you to type whatever you want and save up to 100 pages of that stuff, it can also connect to your PC over USB and in doing so you can transfer the content to your PC. Also when you connect to your PC, you can use the Alphasmart as a keyboard. Yes, you can use it like a regular keyboard. Also this particular model runs on normal store-bought AA batteries and it advertises itself as being able to run for like 700 hours or whatever.

HOWEVER. The main reason I bought this is because the screen is one of those LCD screens like on a Texas Instruments calculator and therefore when I look at it, I don't have to worry about the glare from normal monitors. That's one of the most unique things about this. My eyes can rest from looking at the lit screens of computers and cellphones. The only unfortunate aspect is it can only hold 40 columns of characters and 4 lines. That's not their fault though. I was thinking and theorizing about making a really primitive device like this and I found that for some reason 40 columns and 4 lines is the max for LCDs like this. I don't quite understand why that's the case but this is something that was most likely out of the company's control. It's still enough columns and lines for me to work with.

Oh and by the way don't worry about drivers when connecting over USB. This thing can run on even Windows 98 allegedly and the device I've used it on ran on Linux Mint. I didn't need to install any drivers. It probably uses some really generic keyboard driver since when you send files over USB it's actually just typing in the file for you.

I wish these products return to production.

Oh what a feeling

The unit came over on a slow horse, but it did get over. After an infusion of 3 AA cells, the unit comes to life. I was typing in a matter of seconds. Nothing much to learn. The keys are a bit slow since these are many years old. Usb cable brought instant connectivity and what more could be asked of it?

Now I know what you are thinking, I could have gotten a neo which is a better unit with a better keyboard. No, you don't understand. This is the Alphasmart 3000, not the neo. It has 700 hours of life on one set of batteries not 400. Phew, This thing is rocks and scissors ahead of the neo. It does one thing and it does It right.

The other day we had a power outage during an especially hot afternoon. Although it did not get used, I looked over at the AS3K and just had to smile. What a feeling of freedom.

Now do you understand why the soul of the 3000 is so much better than the neo? It's not the son of but it is the father of. The real deal.

Replaced keyboard with mechanical keyboard

The major flaw in the Alphasmart is its mushy keyboard. I replaced it with a custom PCB, then soldered in 80 mechanical Gateron Brown switches. They are smooth and crisp, with excellent tactile feedback for the best typing experience. My Alphasmart has lost none of its legendary battery capacity, and now rivals or surpasses modern devices for distraction-free writing. Read full review...

Great writing tool.

I love my Alphasmart! I am a writer prone to distraction who was recommended this tool to help mitigate my problems. It’s been working wonderfully for me!

Product arrived very quickly and in great condition— just needed new batteries and the old files deleted. Keys need some cleaning but it all works great! I dressed mine up with some stickers.Read full review...

Full sized keyboard!

This is for the writer who wants the full keyboard, but not all of the other clutter that can distract you from typing. No sneaking on to check your social media, here! Just the work on your blog, journal, or term paper. That's it. If this sounds like what you need, then drop the little cash on this simple uni-tasker.Read full review...

I Like It

It is a good fit for me as I am an essay writer who likes to put down words as they occur. The AlphaSmart, though an older device, it's user looked upon as a retro human who hasn't heard about tablets, the lightweight and operation saves my words until downloaded into my computer and printer. The low cost enabled me to buy two; the second one came with all the cables, power supply, and manual. organ285Read full review...

Great!

Great! That is exactly what I wanted. The only flaw was a little wear and tear on the grips on the back, which didn't make a huge difference.

Best little word processor, period.

This is such a great, no frills word processor for really getting the words going. I know the supply is finite but if you can get one, do. For me, this has drastically increased my writing time and quality. Highly recommend. Read full review...
