Graphic-Novel Noir Done Right !! - Downright Evil !!

Director David Slade crams Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith's Unusual Graphic Novel through the Modern-Horror Grinder, falling back on flash cuts, audio screeches., and an abundance of gore. Amidst these jugernauts of atmospheric tricks., the story-concept remains powerfully strong.
Every Winter in Barrow, Alaska — the Northernmost Town in the United States — experiences a full month without sunlight. This year, an Army of Starving Savage Vampires descend on the Town to take advantage of the Natural Darkness. Local Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George), must put their differences aside long enough to try and protect Barrow and it's townsfolk.
The Night premise explains well, why Slade's film is so dark. Seemingly shot through a "Blue-Lens" Slade's film suffocates the audience with dread., and releases no mercy. The desolate frontier Town of Barrow makes for an incredible piece-set., and the ferocious blizzard that whips at the blood-thirsting Predators and their Prey is a "character" in and of itself.
Hartnett gives a truly solid performance; and Slade manages to drench shocks in with slow-building psychological fear. Ben Foster (though not the only reason) might be one of the biggest reasons to see '30 Days of Night'. The young actor is perfecting the Homicidal Maniac Role, practicing it in two other movies this year — see 'Alpha Dog' and '3:10 to Yuma'.
In '30 Days of Night', he plays a messenger who arrives in Barrow before the Vampires and tries to intimidate Hartnett's Sheriff with the Promise of Death. Foster drapes his lines with an accent that insipidly releases immediate tension.
While 'Sin City' & 'Shoot 'Em Up' have held the 5-Star Graphic Novel feel - 'Sin City' having truly set that 'Bar'., and 'Shoot 'Em Up' (while not a Grahic Novel itself but held that appeal) following in it's steps., '30 Days of Night' I hold at just 1-Star less than a Full-5. (It's hard to put this Graphic Novel transformation to Cinema Screen on Level with 'Sin-City'....or any other Graphic Novel up to 'Sin City' for that matter (though we can wait and see how "The Dark Knight" plays this season with Christian Bale & Heath Ledger - God Bless Ledger).
However, "DO NOT MISS" this frighteningly disturbing nightmare. It would have 5-stars., if I didn't feel obligated to hold it to 'Sin City' standards.

Something for everyone

We actually hadn't heard of this movie until we were looking for new games or movies to try out and realized Josh Hartnett (who we believe to be an inspiring actor) starred in the film. So, needless to say, we bought the item new and shipped it expedited.

The movie was 100% worth not waiting for a better deal on eBay.

The setting in 30 Days of Night was extremely beautiful; picture some far off town, deep in Alaskan snows, covered in cozy cabins and with warm, friendly town folk. Isolated by hundreds of miles of snow, the town accustomed to developing slowly (in terms of technology). It consisted of some vehicles, one helicopter, a small airport that happened to be shut down for the duration of the movie and some huskies (as means of transportation). They couldn't have picked a better location/setting to contribute or lend to the story.

Josh Hartnett stars as the sheriff of this remote town (one of only two sheriffs in the entire town) just before what is called "30 days of night" which, in Alaska, is a period of time that the sun does not rise due to the position of the sun/earth. Although it appears that each year prior to this one, no unusual activity has occurred, the town is suddenly plagued by violent attacks and acts of vandalism. In the mean time, as the 30 days of night approach on the town, 1/2 to 2/3 of its population leaves for the airport to avoid the weather and lack of sunlight. Afterwards, the airport shuts down and the town is left to the darkness. At this point, the town is left to its vulnerability and struggles to survive through this year's 30 days of night.

30 days of night is a excellent horror film full of blood, guts, violence and FINALLY some realistic sound effects (we love the sound of a head being chopped off, it's disturbingly real!). The vampires are unlike what we've seen before and we've seen a fair share of vampire movies. They're fast, smart, cold, reckless and super messy. Speaking of messy, ever get tired of vampires sucking on necks as if they're at a dinner party and don't want to get blood on themselves? Not to worry. These vampires are PLENTY messy and aren't afraid to get it everywhere.

Enough said. Get the movie. You won't be sorry.
