A terrific coming of age & responsibilities to your family; story.

Set in the Ozarks, and strict Shaker tradition, a pig farmer, his wife, and young son, are trying to make ends meet. The young boy witnesses a piglet being born, and raises him as his own. Entering the fair, 'kind' of like Charlotte's Web, but this is written by Robert Newton Peck who claims his writings are of his childhood; therefore..this is not a fictional story. No magical spiders.

The young boy has strict 'Shaker' parents, who believe in hard work, and farming for the family. Times become hard in this story, and I will leave it at that.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read, regardless of age. It teaches important lessons about becoming a 'Man.' This was the first 'novel' I had ever read on my own, and shall never forget it. I'm happy to see it's still in print. Give it a READ!!

Every child should read this wonderful story!

I am a huge fan of Robert Peck. Most children have enjoyed his "Soup" series that are laugh out loud even for adults. "A Day No Pigs Would Die" is a wonderful ride through one of Rob Pecks adolescent years that is filled with seriousness, laughter, and sadness. All of my children are homeschooled and all have read this book sometimes several times. Even now my 20 year old tears up if I mention it. His story has had a profound effect on everyone that has read it and gives appreciation to respect a child has for elders and respect an adult gives a child especially in the difficult 13th year. Something that is lacking in this generation. I recommend it to every child and every mom and dad that hasnt already read it. It is an awesome book and a true classic!Read full review...
