One for the Time Team generation.

I bought this book because a good friend told me it was the best thing he'd read in ages. I was a bit surprised to find it so easily and cheaply on eBay. You'll be familiar with the author, Neil's the Scottish chap with the long hair and the fine brogue from Coast. It's rather good to be able to hear his voice in your head as you read. If you're of the Time Team generation and want to understand how Britain "started" this is a great place to kick off, well written, ordered and with just the right level of detail.
