clutch was defective, but easily repaired---works great now
After I fixed the modular clutch it worked well. Before installing it, check to see whether the 3 inch wide circular center plate is firmly attached to the side of the clutch that bolts to the flywheel. The unit I bought had a loose plate that I didn't notice until I had reinstalled the transmission and was trying to line up the 4 flywheel to clutch bolts. They would not line up. I tried for over an hour---very frustrating. I ended up dropping the transmission again to figure out what what wrong. Once the transmission was on the ground again I could see the problem. The center disk had dislodged. Since that disk is what centers the clutch it was no surprise that the bolt holes would not line up. I fixed the dislodged disk by putting it on a flat heavy metal surface and hitting the three tabs around its edge once each to spread the tabs out a bit. Then I took my 34mm socket, placed it over the hub of the disk, put the whole thing back on my metal anvil and hit the socket once with my ball peen hammer. That hit centered the disk. Having repaired the modular clutch it installed very easily---I have an engine hoist so positioning the transmission was not difficult. I don't know how one could position a transmission like that without a hoist.Read full review...
