Great value on an older router

These were a Product of the Year when introduced, and remain a very decent dual band router. Perhaps not as great coverage as one with external antennas, but certainly good enough for most applications. I use two of these; one for general usage and one dedicated to security cameras, both almost 4 years old by now. A few things to know. Be sure that you upgrade the firmware, if needed, as there were quite a few bug fixes. The most recent firmware is still Beta, and will raise a flag requesting update which you need to ignore. This has been the case for over a year, but according to Asus they are still planning to address this. Not an issue that effects operation, just annoying. I really like the web-based user interface on this, and it has all the extra features 90% of users will never need but the other 10% like me would otherwise miss. Examples would include port mapping, and support of services such as HTTP, FTP, etc.
One thing I must note, however. While there are two USB ports, usable for either external storage or printers, my experience is that hooking an external hard drive to this to try and use it as either a NAS or backup drive is a fail. It consistently trashed the file structure, though connecting the drive back to a Windows PC and doing a check disk would resolve the issue without loss of data. I never got any satisfaction from Asus on this issue, so ended up moving my USB back to a PC instead.
Bottom line is, if you can get one of these for the right price, and don't need the newest 802.11AC compatibility, this is a great box! I also have never experienced a lock-up or other issue that required a reboot to resolve. For a router, that's saying something!

Asus n56u router

Very frustrating piece of equipment. Cannot update to latest firmware and I cannot connect my IPhone and iPad. Keeps saying password is wrong, when it's the correct password. I've called Asus, Apple, Verizon, and Charter. No help. It also drops connection on Xbox one and has lag.Read full review...

ASUS RT-N56U

Awesone router!! Has both 2.4 & 5 GHz bands which is awesome. The 5ghz is a faster connection with less traffic interference from other WiFi devices making it ideal. Speeds are blazing fast on either connection as well as wired wise with the gigabit ports. The 2 USB ports are a nice addition as well. I can connect a USB printer or hard drive and it works within my network. Good router and great value!Read full review...

Elegant to look at, simple to set up, and a long distance champ as well!

I purchased this Asus RT-N56UC wireless N router to replace a Cisco-Linksys N router my son was taking to college with him. That router had range problems - I could not get a strong enough signal on the first floor of my house for my Canon wireless printer even though the router was less than 50 feet away on the second floor; also I had no signal in my workshop building, less than 100 feet away. The Asus was one of the top rated routers for distance by an expert review on the "Bestcovery" website. I now have full bars throughout my house and 4 of 5 bars in my workshop. Set up was simple and the form of the router is as elegant as the photographs suggest.Read full review...

Finally a router thaty works great (the important thing)

I have had several routers and as I have upgraded the technology, they have all gone from marginal to won't work. The ASUS works great and also looks like it is from a high end design studio. I would recommend it to any one looking to upgrade to a really good router with exceptional aesthetics.Read full review...

Incredibly reliable, never needs a reset to function normally

Unless you need a very fast home network between your computers or your internet speeds are 600+ mb/s, this router is the best you can get. The newer versions are great too, but why pay more for faster speeds that I won't get from my ISP in the next decade? This and the Apple routers are the only products that I haven't needed to reset every few days to continue using. The security is good enough for the average user and it supports 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to reduce interference with other electronics. I now have 2 of these in my house and I still love them in 2017!Read full review...

love It !!!

I bought the ASUS RT-N56U to replace a failing other brand wireless router. To my surprise ASUS a brand I am already familiar with makes routers. So I bite and WOW this thing is fast easy to configure it works with the Wii and Xbox360 flawlessly not to mention the 3 wired computers and three wireless laptops my family uses.I run a small computer shop as a side job and having a no fail rock solid router like this one make my job much easier!! Thanks ASUS and E-Bay for the opportunity for me to get this great product at an even great price!!Read full review...

Stable router for most household needs...

This is a quality Wi-Fi router that has many great features with ease of use. If you have no heavy interference in your house appliances or share too much bandwidth from a major neighborhood (apartment complex, commercial buildings, etc...) then the performance should be adequate for typical usage.

I bought this used on eBay and use it for 2 smartphones, Amazon Fire Stick, YouTube on 2 TVs, and a laptop with average web surfing. I place it in the middle of the 700 sq ft house and am able to use both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bandwidths stably. No dropped connections.

I'd recommend this for typical usage in most small spaces. Very strong and reliable.

Fast, Stable, Capable. For the money, nothing else even comes close.

If you are looking for a robust, speedy, and feature-rich router which doesn't cost a lot, this is it. I use two of these, one for home and one for a church network I manage. I use the one on the church network to run DHCP for over 100 devices as well as run an FTP drive, 10 other access points and switches, and 3 network printers. It gives me all of the control and visibility I need to manage my network. I push the limits of this consumer grade piece of hardware and it keeps up.Read full review...
