Amadeus (VHS, 1993)

Having been found by his servant with his throat slashed by his own hand, little-known and often ridiculed former court composer to the King of Austria, Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), is rushed to hospital. This is just one more example of his inability to succeed. In his frustration he couldn't even kill himself. Placed in a home for the insane, he later tells this story to his priest in confession.

Years before as the court composer in Austria, and a devotee of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), he recalled his first meeting with Mozart. Having painstakenly written a tribute for him, it was abruptly corrected and replayed to his humiliation. This musical genius that he had revered for years, was nothing but a spoiled, crude, foul-mouthed, man-child with no respect for anyone or anything, but with a talent, a talent that could only have come from God Himself! Salieri immediately decided that he would destroy this abomination, this waster of Gods blessings. . . If only God had given him this talent, he surely would only give reverence to God. But no, with his confidence and religious dedication shaken; furious that this irreverent, childish, person could write such thoughtful and beautiful music, Salieri vows to keep Mozart's talent from ever flourishing. From this moment he works toward the destruction of Mozart and ultimately himself. I have enjoyed this movie many times and I'm sure that you will too.
