Why 5 Oscars?

Having read the original movie script [part of an exercise] before seeing the picture, I was looking for more development of the characters and story. I suppose any number of production constraints led to the movie being somewhat shortened and superficial, but still it gave a picture of a certain part of American society. How real was it?
