A great loss to literature

Since Henning Mankell died last year I have made a point of working my way through all his works. What an amazing man he was, not only for his sense of mood and intimacy with the bleak Swedish landscape and the brazen beauty that is Africa, but for his captivating sense of story and place. His characters are real, and the more I read the deeper my relationship with them grows.

Reading the books is far more satisfying than watching the films, but having said that, one needs to do both to get the full breadth of this man's reach.

The audio books are equally as satisfying but also disappointing when they are narrated by an American reader.
