Too Much Al, but Stil...

Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is a compelling presentation about the urgency and potential impact of continued global warming. It's also a reasonably entertaining documentary, considering it's basically a Powerpoint presentation, though Al clearly used something better than Powerpoint to put it together on his prominently displayed Mac Powerbook. As an aside, the good guys always use Macs in the movies, while the bad guys use PCs. Watch and see if I'm wrong.

Anyway, this last point about Al and his Powerbook gets at my only complaint: too much Al. The guy's massive ego just comes blasting through as he returns again and again to the sort of self-promotion that led so many to jump on him when he made otherwise trivial gaffes about his role in developing the internet. Watching this video, you feel ashamed that we as a people were so stupid not to vote Al into office in 2000, and you don't hear much about his abyssmally poor performance as a candidate.

But no matter. Even Al can't undermine the compelling science, compellingly told in this film. Check it out.

The Truth is out there

Al Gore asks, "Should we prepare for other threats besides terrorists?"

Decidedly yes.

Formerly the next president of the United States who never got to do the job, Al Gore continues to go city by city delivering his slide presentation on global warming to try and better the world, not just the country. This twice Oscar nominated film not only explores in detail the progression and effects of global warming, but also follows Al Gore's autobiographical journey of important moments in his life that made him who he is today. This movie really is a frightening account of what could happen fifty short years down the road if action isn't taken. It isn't all despairing, however. Gore relays the information in an often amusing manner with jokes and banter effectively switching from one subject to the next while tying everything together.

I have to say, he really is an amazing public speaker who has had a fire under him to do something about global warming since he was a young man in college. If we had gotten to see more of this personality before the election, would his vote have been more substantial? Probably not, after all Jeb Bush was running Florida and what's past is past, but you can't help but wonder while watching this film......what if? What if they had let the popular vote carry the election? What if we had started working on global warming with an environmentally friendly president seven years ago? How much better could we be off today?

The numbers and the science is devastating. The effects are everywhere. One of them is that with global warming, you get stronger storms like Hurricane Katrina which started off as a Level One in Florida, then went south a bit and mixed with warmer waters and came back to New Orleans as......well, we all saw the news. The glaciers are melting and becoming so thin that more pieces are going to break off and create heightened sea levels all over the world. 60 million people are at stake in India alone. Plus there has been evidence now of polar bears actually drowning as they swim sixty miles or more to find the disappearing ice. The last time a big piece of glacier broke off into the ocean, it stopped the North Atlantic Current and threw Europe into another ice age within ten years. But that could never happen again, right? There's no big piece of ice near there, is there? Oh wait...yeah...GREENLAND. And it's got shallow pools of water forming at the top which tunnels down through the ice melting it.

And people despair and say oh well, nothing we can do now, huh? That's wrong. Gore showed a chart showing how much we could fix with each step and actually we have the methods to get our carbon dioxide emissions down below those of 1970. If we tried. Gore says, "It's not a political issue. It's a moral one," and it really is. The United States is the biggest contributor to the problem by far so this country does need to take a leading role in correcting it. We are one of two countries in the world who has not signed the Kyoto agreement. That motivated several U.S. cities to sign it as cities instead. States are taking initiative where the federal government is slacking.

People always use the economy versus the environment argument and in all honesty, taking initiative to fix these old methods and bad habits people are using would create more jobs in the long run. Plus what would you rather have? A few gold bars or the whole world?

An Inconvenient Truth (2006, DVD)

Info is honest, concise, and important... Al Gore did and excellent service to our country with this project, but as a life long Republican I understand clearly that many Republicans will never view this important film simply because of his political views, which has little to do with the film's factual content - its a shame. I rented this movie then decided I needed to own a copy to show to others... david castello - Science TeacherRead full review...

Great Presentation, BUT IT HAPPENS TO BE TOTAL RUBBISH!

If you want to sensationalize Global Warming by the use of smoke & mirrors, let's spend money & produce a film that will scare us into believing CO2 levels will destroy us all. THIS FILM IS TOTAL RUBBISH!

Don't you get it yet? The EARTH is involved in a cycle that continues going up & down. This is an ANCIENT NATURAL PHENOMENON that is continually reoccurring CONSTANTLY. Notice that ever 360 years A CYCLE OF EXTREME MOISTURE enters the atmosphere due to natural PATTERNS caused by VULCANISM (earth activity) which warms the SEAS, Solar cycles (Sun spots) causing EXTRA RADIATION, IN-TURN DRIVING long-term climate changes, NOT MANKIND & CERTAINLY NOT C02 EMISSION. All of this RUBBISH has to do with POWER/CONTROL of the MASSES.

Let's just do some CO2 comparisons here. C02 levels inside a submarine usually stay around about 6000 ppm (parts per million). A large crowd in an auditorium can get up to 10,000-12,000 ppm. Commercial Greenhouse Growing is 1,000-1,200 ppm. Currently, air is at it's all time 600 million year low at 385 ppm.

Solving this puzzle is like working it without the box cover. However, this is totally laughable since we all exhale CO2 & the plants on our earth need & have had more Carbon Dioxide (C02) for millions of years & thrived much better with higher levels. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) should be RENAMED THE IRRESPONSIBLE POLITICAL CLIMATE COVER-UP.

I had my suspicions but didn't think enough to question. Applying this publicly, WE are LESS comfortable with Science TODAY, let alone climate science models. OUR IMMEDIATE WORRIES SHOULD BE ABOUT THE NEXT MINI ICE AGE. 20% of OUR community SEEMS comfortable with science facts. 80% avoid THE FACTS of C02 levels because they just are not versed in the subject. I bet that you can't find a successful journalist that doesn't jump on this like flies on flypaper for this reason. Journalist usually produce what sells; sensationalism truly sells (we are all going to FRY & THE SKY IS FALLING). People are generally receptive to the information being published, but are still healthily skeptical, however, it's currently political suicide to suggest anyone might not care about ecology. Most politicians are afraid to make a stand.

Politicians have defined the navigational structure of this conversation. So that if you navigate certain terrain to verify evidence for something, then you are in a political mine-field. The architecture of the focus is already set; the dialogue is set; energetic mind-fields in the public ethos, the psychological & emotional mysticism is already primed. The collective concern fits perfectly into this story that we have been fed in which I too bought. I bought IT HOOK, LINE, & SINKER because it sounded sensible & believable. Thanks to Robert Felix's "Magnetic Reversals & Evolutionary Leaps" & "Not by Fire but by Ice" & going to ICEAGENOW.COM, I now feel totally informed about this subject.

IT'S A CYCLE, & that correlates to changes in the sun, changes in the magnetic fields, earth spin, & changes that have to do with climate extinctions. Nobody can afford to be wrong about this. Europe can't afford to take chances now since a major MINI-ICE AGE is truly inevitable. I would bet that most in charge already have taken action & have contingencies in place to seize control of power.

An entire evil industrial international complexity is on the way. This is a disaster for us all. Don't believe this rubbish. Try and GET SMART!

An I nconvenient Truth

I loved everything about this documentary. I have so much respect for Al Gore as an envirinmentalist and as a man. I wish more men were like Al Gore, forgetting the big macho, ego stuff and political games and just getting right down to business.
He has a very important message ....and hes doing it all by himself country by country, person by person and now the dvd. He shouldn't have to carry this burden alone. As he states, there are things all of us can do every day to reduce carbon dioxide. We don't have to stop living but we do need to be more conscious of every thing we do. The law of cause and effect. Every thing effects everything. Every movie, every book every person you meet in your life effects you in a positive or negative way. Television needs to air more educational information like this dvd because all the violence and sex is not raising the level of class or morality in this country. We need people to remember how to care about their fellow man and his needs too and to remember how to care about the planet that gives us our daily bread. Food doesnt
grow in grocery stores. It magically grows in the soil that man with his pesticides and chemicals and pollution is quickly destroying all the natural processes of nature. Man wanting quick solutions to end pest problems, deadly diseases and just wanting things so instantly has driven us into destruction of our planet in record time. Its only taken 100 years since the invention of the automobile and the great industrial age to really mess up our planet. Now were in a rush to find another planet thats liveable so we can trash that 1 too or at least send all our trash there. We all need to wake up and share the responsibility for the mess we are all in. There are species disappearing every year at an alarming rate...and yet man is the species that needs to be extinct
in order for the other animals and insects and planet to survive. Or we can wake up and turn it all around NOW. What will we do ?????

An Excellent Earth Day, or ANY day movie !!!

I recently bought the DVD with former Vice-President Al Gore, Jr called "An Inconvenient Truth". The movie was released in US theaters on May 24, 2006 and was released on DVD on November 21, 2006. The movie grossed about $24 million in the US and about $48.5 million worldwide (including the US gross). Al Gore, Jr. was born March 31, 1948 in Washington, DC. He does an awesome job of getting the attention of common folk, like me and perhaps like you. I plan on promoting this DVD on my main website called "El Mundo De Monte Mendoza". He makes the issue of global warming very clear and easy to understand. I do my small part to help reduce global warming by taking the bus as often as possible. I plan on spending more time reading and studying about this issue and other environmental issues as well. There is also an excellent song by Melissa Etheridge in the movie called "I Need To Wake Up". One of the extras on the DVD is the video of that song which Melissa wrote and performs. That song is on certain copies of her greatest hits CD called "The Road Less Traveled". It is song number 18 on those certain limited edition CDs. Thank you Al Gore for inspiring me to make changes in my life that will in a small, but important way, impact our future. I pray that you live a long life and that you continue this excellent mission that you are undertaking. For more information, see Al Gore's website called "ClimateCrisis.net." There is a link below for that site. This movie won two Oscars. One for Best Feature Documentary and one for Best Original Song. This movie won several other awards also, which are listed in the link below. This is a perfect DVD to watch for Earth Day 2007 on Sunday, April 22, or for ANY day of the year...since every day truly needs to be Earth Day. I would recommend the DVD "The Day After Tomorrow", the 2004 movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid as a great double feature.

An Inconvenient Truth (2006, DVD)

This is one of my favorite movies/documentaries ever. I t features former vice president and who used to be the "Next President of the United States of America" Al Gore. Al Gore tells the true effects and truths of Global warming. In this video, he shows a complete PowerPoint presentation that shows how the ice caps are melting along with graphs that shows how the Earth will be in 50 years, thousands of years ago, and other times, how our environment, and how Fossil Fuels affect each and every one of us. There are also some facts in it on how you can prevent/help Global Warming, such as just by changing one regular light bulb from a regular light bulb to a Fluorescent light bulb can save up to 150 lbs. of Carbon Dioxide a year. and many less known facts. I would personally recommend this movie to anyone. Good Luck!Read full review...

I regret I did not view this when it first came out.

I was not one of Mr. Gore's fans when he was a politician, and I would never have viewed this on my own. I watched it only because it was a required element of a college class curriculum. Despite my initial objections (driven by political beliefs), I am now a disciple of Mr. Gore's message. I purchased this DVD because I intend to watch it with every one of my 8 grandchildren. I believe this will be their heritage. I want to use this DVD to prepare them for the world they will inherit from me and others of my generation.Read full review...

Enlightening Documentary-Changes Your Perspective

Gread DVD that I bought for my Biology students. Sometimes you have to force this stuff on them. Many of them commented that they did not know most of the information presented and actually asked me a few times "is this for real?". It sparked discussion. This film does not have the usual bells and whistles that keeps teens entertained and interested, but if given the chance, most viewers become concerned citizens...at least for a while.

Great documentary with wonderful footage. Al Gore provides us with the scientific evidence for Global Warming in an easy to understand way. He uses cartoons, animations, pictures and video to enlighten us all about the reality of what is happening in the world that we do not see.

I did not expect to be given a glimpse into Al Gore's life and his devotion to this topic. Very interesting information about a man whom I believe, is more of an environmentalist than a politician. There is nothing quite like this about a global problem that affects us all.

What more needs to be said before something is done?

I have heard a lot about the DVD and wanted to see it for myself. I am happy that I got it. I am not happy that our government and large businesses are not doing more to admit that there is a problem and that they need to step up to the plate to help the world. Without changes, this world of ours doesn't stand a very good chance.

As individuals we all try to recycle, watch our energy and water consumption, etc. but without the government admitting and committing to do something about the problem, I am not hopeful for our children and our grandchildren's future world. I don't want my son and his children to have to live in the kind of world that Mr. Gore and the scientists predict for future Earth. I will be long gone, but I will not be leaving this world with the comfort that my child and his future children will have a world in which they can breath, eat the food and live a good life. That is a pitiful situation to leave as our legacy.

I applaud Al Gore for standing up and speaking out. It takes courage to speak up against current political administrations, but the words very much need to shouted by every person until the people with the power (those that mandate laws to correct the pollution and green-house gas problems) "GET IT AND DO THE RIGHT THINGS TO FIX IT"

Thanks for asking for my opinion.
