An Introduction to Information Theory by J. R. Pierce

"An Introduction to Information Theory" by John Robinson Pierce (1980)
is an excellent starting place if you're interested in learning about
effective ways to transmit data as well as learning about the challenges involved
in the transmission process such as noise. The fact that one finds an interest in the subject
to begin with is fascinating in itself. The mathematical computations are
easily digestible and there is a refresher course in the appendix for
non-mathematicians who have a basic grasp on arithmetic. The author
also discusses music & linguistics and provides illuminating examples of each.
