Great as a Linux machine. Not so good as a Mac, as it's age really shows.

Usually one can't expect much from a machine nearly a decade old. The performance is somewhat limited and as a Mac (El Capitan,) it's pretty poor. Operating a lightweight system, like Ubuntu (Linux,) it really shines as a capable machine. It's very well built and can take a beating (a fall from a desktop) and the screen is much better than the plastic retina display of more recent MacBook Pros (in terms of durability, at least.) The 4gb of ram is plenty for multi-tasking in Ubuntu. One aspect that is very useful is the backlit keyboard, which is very useful in low light use. Read full review...
