Wrong description

I was actually sent an IPad 2 which is better because it does have a sim slot when you can't get wifi. Battery life does vary with internet signal, if you keep a lot of apps open and if you allow apps to send notifications etc.Read full review...

Still works well but outdated.

As iPad users know, the 1st gen stopped at IOS 5 so not much you can do with this now. You can only use a limited amount of old games and not many apps. There are no more updates for this device so you're really stuck in the year 2010 when it was released....Nice loud sound and good for mail and you-tube videos and music playback though. Let's face it, its a 1st gen and well outdated now, time for it to go to the stud farm for iPad's!Read full review...

iPad for a 99 year old!

I bought an iPad for my elderly dad who is 99. He had just two requirements: to be able to easily look things up on the internet, and to send and receive emails. He has had an eeePC for a few years but never really got used to using it as he found there was too much to remember. Because of his lack of mobility and problems with arthritis an iPad seemed to be the best solution for its simplicity of use and portability.

I found it a little tricky to connect to his broadband through an Orange Livebox, but a phonecall to Orange sorted out the problem. He still doesn't find it easy to remember the logic of what to press etc to navigate to what he wants - but it's difficult to even know where to start with someone who has never used a computer in their working life.

I personally have to say that it's a very nifty piece of kit - easy and logical to use and the image quality is fantastic. I wouldn't buy one myself - a small netbook suffices very well for my own portable computing needs as it's more flexible, but for the purpose of my elderly dad the iPad is the perfect alternative to a PC as he can sit in his armchair and have it on his lap. I bought him a little pen from Amazon to use on the screen which is easier than his big fingers. One disappointment is that ITV player does not work on the iPad because it requires Flash which is not supported by Apple on the iPad or iPhone. BBC iPlayer has no problems however. Hopefully this may be addressed in the future.

To summarise ... the iPad is stylish, easy to use and the quality is great, but for me it doesn't beat the versatility of a small netbook.

No Adobe Flash compatibility, but great in all other aspects.

I love everything about my iPad but with a notable exception, no Adobe Flash. I bought with the intent to let my children go on mathletics and other educational programmes, but I did not realise that these websites use Adobe Flash which is not compatible with the iPad. This also means that there are certain videos on You Tube which you cannot see too.

On a positive note the picture quality is fantastic, the apps available are wonderful, the size and weight are fantastic and the sound quality is very good.

A fantastic, if somewhat limited, device. Get one if you can!

Like many other people, we have several computers in our house, all of them running MS Windows variants of one type or another; but for the times when you just want to check on something on the net, or look at eBay, find a recipe or just watch YouTube but don't want to fire up a main pc or netbook, the iPad comes into its own. It is quick, easy to use and an enjoyable experience in action. We wanted the 32GB variant of this gadget, but when this 16GB one came up at such a good price, it was bought for me for my birthday by my lovely wife (thanks Hun), and I love it.
Don't get me wrong, it is just as limited as all Apple devices. You are locked into the hateful iTunes mess of an application unless you want to 'tinker' (i.e. jailbreak it), and have to route everything through that when saving music or films or other such media to it. You cannot easily transfer files and folder onto it and away from it like a Windows Mobile device, and you cannot add to the storage via the use of an extra SD card (as most Windows Mobile devices have been able to do for years) because Apple have decided that you don't need it. And iTunes as an application? Oh dear. The user experience of iTunes is, for me at least, one of frustration and confusion. I know I (probably) can do the things I want too, but can't find out how and trying to find out the answers is like trying to have a quiet meal at your local hostelry with Lady GaGa; impossible. Very often I feel like it is similar to buying a car where the manufacturer decides for me what days I can drive it and in what direction!
What makes up for this is that, like the iPhone (an awful phone in my opinion), the user experience of actually using the device (downloading apps and using them for example) is superb. Seamless and flawless (usually), we downloaded the inimitable Angry Birds (Free Edition) to it within a few minutes of powering it up and were playing within seconds. We then downloaded and paid for GarageBand and were making music (no not that kind of 'sweet music') also within moments.
Unlike the netbooks we have and use for specific purposes, the iPad is used every day, sometimes for a few moments, sometimes for hours at a time. It is left in the lounge most of the day and just picked up when needed.
Like everyone else with one of these, we have bought accessories for it (screen protectors, portable stand, small bluetooth keyboard etc.) but are always surfing for more! I even saw a 'Scarface' cover for it recently (I resisted buying it) so would think that almost anything I could think of is probably available
The user experience is, as already mentioned, excellent. It can slow down when looking at a lot of images (no I mean on eBay!), but in general it works with our network without issue and is fairly quick in use. What we love is that you think of something to look at, you press the Home button, get onto Safari and are looking at the net within a few moments. I have tried an Android version, which was a LOT cheaper (and looked the same), but the Android OS seemed flawed and did not have the same elegance that I have to (grudgingly) admit the iPad has.
If you can afford such a toy, and it is a toy albeit a grown up one, then I'd heartily recommend one as, until Blackberry, HTC and the like get their communal acts together, the iPad is the easy to use living room device for net surfing and wasting time; a feature it accomplishes immaculately.
Now, if only Apple would sort out iTunes...

Apple iPad

Already had one myself so bought my husband one. 16gb does not seem a lot of memory but I have 32gb and have 600 photos, 400 tunes and about 60 apps. They are a pleasure to use compared to lap tops and quick loading. Apps so easy to load and so many are free. Robust and fun to use.once set up emails, it's easy to use and Internet is fast too. If had to find a fault it's that flash player is not supported by apple so some emails I get I can not play. Battery life is fantastic too and can play for up to 10 hours without charging. So light and portable too. So many games are free that it's great to keep kids occupied too.. Recommend to anyone.Read full review...

Amazing product, has all the features you need and more, value for money!

Firstly, I was always dead against Ipad's, I never had anything positive to say about them, I thought they were just a fad, but now, my opinion has totally changed, out of all the purchases I have ever made, this has got to be in my top 3, it is a perfect size, strongly build, very tough, it has an excellent finish, the battery lasts for ever, complete value for money and basically does everything you would want or need it to do apart from making you a cup of tea, the only negative is that the screen gets finger marks all over but really, who cares, if that is the only negative about this fantastic piece of technology then I shall accept that. It is perfection, without doubt.Read full review...

Excellent device, easy to use and good value for money!

Excellent product in great condition. Son loves it. It may not have a camera like the iPad 2 but it has plenty of free games to access, access to the Internet, I-messages and you can download films and music. Very easy to use. Bought a case for it but it was too small so be careful that you purchase a case that fits this iPad. Also bought a wireless keyboard which connected really easy. Overall excellent device which was good value for money.Read full review...

Ipad v the rest

I bought this for my wife. She originally asked for an e-book reader but after looking at the pros and cons I decided the colour screen won over the mono reader. All the e-book stores have an "app" to enable you to use their extensive libraries so no conflicts there either. Comparing the Ipad to other tablets and reading various user reviews again there seems to be no contest as it wins hands down in the battery life stakes recording over 4 times the usable life of other 10" tablets and has a overwhelming advantage in the touch screen as it is so easy and accurate to use in practice. Not being a techno geek my wife is delighted with it and has taken to using it in place of her laptop too for emails and searching the web. The only downside I can see is that it does not have an in built camera , something I gather Apple are working on for the next generation models and the fact you cannot plug usb devices into it without the apple interface. All in all a brilliant piece of kit and well worthy of the success it is achieving. Definitely 9/10Read full review...

If you love your gadgets then this is for you.

My daughter had received an ipad for christmas and I was so impressed with it I thought I would buy one for myself.I already have a pc and a laptop but the comparison in convenience between them and the iPad is unbelievable.Open up,switch on and your there.Took me a few days to find my way around but I got there.I just love it and use it constantly throughout the day.(I'm retired so lots of time) The battery life is a full 10 hours as stated so loads of time to do what you want.Highly recommend if your a computer buff as I am.Read full review...

Good, but consider the newer versions or alternatives first.

I purchased the 1st generation model as I didn't particularly want to pay for a camera that I didn't want however, this model is quite a bit heavier than the v2 or 3 and is therefore not quite handy as the newer models. Another small thing it lacks is the magnetic switch to switch it on and off when the cover is closed or opened.
That said, it does everything I wanted it to and is a great bit of kit.
Although I was happy with the price I paid I think prospective buyers need to think carefully about what they want a tablet for as there are now so many cheaper alternatives to Apple.
