Au Hasard Balthazar ( 2005, Single Disc Special Edition)

Au Hasard Balthazar is the story of the Donkey that is handed down again and again to a myriad of owners. Balthazar is the true Beast of Burden, works as hard as he can to serve his Masters, no matter how badly they treat him. The Director, Robert Breeson, has the Minimalist style, and uses imagery to tell the story elements that implies, or leads, the audience to think about what has occured, or even what is to happen. Balthazar's cycle of treatment by people is similar to how Marie's, his first owner, life has endured. Both encounter the dark side of people, and Balthazar still is ready to serve with everything he has. The Special Features are a must-see for anyone who admires Robert Breeson's works, and the 1966 French TV show that has Jean-Luc-Godard, Louis Malle and Breeson. This is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. I agree.Read full review...

A donkey is the observer of the human condition.

This extraordinary allegory in which the donkey is a christ-figure, incarnated into the human scene. The interview with the Bresson, the director, is most revealing. A special Easter season experience.Read full review...
