Banker to the Poor

Muhammad Yunus, a visionary from Bangladesh was interviewed on television after he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I immediately bought his book to find out how this economics professor relentlessly sought a solution to help starving people help themselves. Yunus along with others he recruited founded the Grameen Bank which makes miniscule loans to the poor. What a difference one person can make. It all started when he loaned a group of stool makers $27 to cover the cost of materials so that they could sell their craft without paying money lenders horrific fees. It is a fascinating read which I would have enjoyed more if the material had been condensed alittle.Read full review...

Great introduction to microfinance

This book is an excellent explanation of microfinance, especially for someone who isn't well versed in the subject yet. Since it's written by the originator of the concept of microfinance, it provides a nice narrative of how microfinance developed and how it has evolved & adapted throughout the years. It is also surprisingly easy to read (for such a typically dry subject), and Yunus's personal narrative makes the book flow quite well. It's doesn't delve deeply into criticisms of microfinance - he only briefly mentions some of the battles & criticisms he's faced - so other reading might be necessary if you want a complete & more detailed understanding of microfinance.Read full review...

Banker to the Poor

This is a bit of a biography in that it takes you through how Yunus first became interested in and started with microfinance all the way through his first 25 years of experience. It is an incredible story of one man's ability to make an impact and his perseverence and commitment to helping the poorest of the poor. I found it inspiring and a good read. My wife is now reading it as well!Read full review...
