Good Tablet for Reading

It has some issues with closing programs. Not sure if that is an android issue or a Nook issue, since I installed an N2A card to have it working more like an android. I have had no issues downloading apps, either before or after N2A. I was getting screen flickers while using it and discovered, through research, that Nook tends to do that when plugged in. So now I unplug it when using it. The screen is awesome. Everything is so bright and clear. It is a little heavy to hold in one hand while lying down, but it is manageable.

Overall I am pleased with my purchase.

Nice tablet.

It does what I need it to do. The screen's quality is good. Memory can be expanded with microSD card, which is a plus. B&N latest software version is Android 4.0.4, which isn't that great. And, I don't think B&N will update the software anymore.Read full review...

For reading, watching movies and browsing, this is the best value for money

The best tablet from B&N (this is my second one). All reasonable features you expect -- good display size, long battery life, plenty of Android apps. Add to this the frugal price and this is a deal that seemingly can not get better. But it can, if you buy it refurbished like me -- you will get (an almost) new tablet for the less than 1/3 of iPad or the likes.

However it is not perfect. It is not pure Android, instead B&N has tweaked it quite a bit. It is well done but one negative side is that for updates this table depends entirely on B&N. My old tablet runs Gingerbread and will never receive official update. I did that with N2A card but that is different story.

Another concern is the RAM memory. It may have been sufficient when the tablet has been released, but recently (in 2013) B&N decided to allow Google Play on it. Which is great because it makes huge collection of apps available on this Nook. But the price for that is that now there are a bunch of extra background processes, to support Google Play and other Google services, running on the tablet all the time, and they take up memory. So that leaves less memory to run the primary apps like browser, email reader, book reader, etc. The effect is that this latest generation table is rather ... let's just say slow when apps are started. Much slower than my older Nook tablet. On the good side, after the startup the app performance is fine.

Overall -- great tablet. For reading, watching movies and casual Internet browsing, this is the best value for your money.

A lot to like

I anticipated battery problems but found that the battery is quite adequate for my use. The WIFI radio seems to be a bit weaker than my other devices but that is about the only complaint I can find. I really like the tab/hole. I've attached an old camera strap. Works well with Google Drive as far as connecting with files or you can just copy them using the USB cable.Read full review...

Great tablet, better than Amazon Fire

Good size screen, battery holds charge well especially for used unit. Using it mostly for reading eBooks and is better than Amazon Fire tablet reader. Amazon tablet can read only eBooks in Amazon MOBI and AWZ3 formats. Nook tablet allows download of many eBook readers from Google Play Store. Librera reader can read any format and reads Amazon formats better than Amazon reader does. Used tablet ended up being a great deal.Read full review...

Best Nook ever and better buy than iPad if you don't need a camera

I cannot say enough good things about this tablet. I bought mine from the local B&N store six months ago. I love the user interface on this tablet. It operates smoothly and performs well. If you don't need a camera, this is one of the best tablets for the money you can consider. The screen is amazing--movies look great. I prefer to read books with my text white and page grey. B&N's decision to open the Nook to the Google Play store make it a smarter option to the Kindle. The micro SD slot also gives the Nook a leg up when compared to Kindle and iPad. I didn't think the user profiles would matter to me, but with a family I really do appreciate this feature when I hand over my tablet for someone else to use. If you have children, the parental controls are very nice.

The speaker is good--not great. If watching movies, I either cup my hand behind the speaker or plug in my handly portable speakers.

I use my Nook HD+ for reading books and magazines, surfing the web, listening to Pandora, watching movies, typing papers, watching PowerPoints my professors post, playing games, etc. I highly recommend Kingsoft Office for anyone wanting a solid MS Office compatible office app. It's free and I type papers frequently using it, syncing seamlessly with DropBox.

I am a public school teacher, and we have an iPad cart classes can use. Honestly, my Nook tablet works smoother than the iPad for so many things...for 1/3 the cost!

B&N offer a solid 1 yr warranty and good customer support. We have several Nooks in the family and have one tablet replaced and one cord replaced over the past couple years. Fast, friendly service. With the price of $149 now, this tablet is the best you can buy for the price, hands down.

Great price on a GREAT product!!!

Got one for me and one for the wife, and we Love them!!! EXCEPT, we are running full Android 4.3 on there instead of the Nook operating system. The Nook software is very restraining as far as what you can do, so we for rid of it for android accessibility. It's a dual core so plenty fast, only see a minor drag on it when there several things downloading, but that's true for any device. The battery usually lasts at least 2 days, even with hours of use each day! (None of the work/play for 3 hours then have to charge, I would say its good for at least 10-12 hours of straight use!) very impressed with this tablet and probably buying a 3rd for the rest of the family!Read full review...

Great tablet

When compared with the Amazon and several Chinese made ones, this updated version of the B&N Nook is a great product. It would be excellent if a SIM data and a slightly stronger batt were added to the system, easing mobile navigation with news, business, and GPS. My Huawei Ascend Mate 6" phone is a killer.Read full review...

A nice tablet, especially when jailbroken with Cyanogenmod

As I begin to review my recently-acquired Nook HD+ I need to point out that it is running Cyanogenmod, a bootloader that offers a more open and unadulterated version of Android 4.4 “KitKat” than the locked down version of Android that the device runs by default. This device was already modified when I acquired it, so I have never experienced it running in its native state. I have heard performance is a little better without the Nook OS's bloat, but I cannot confirm that from firsthand experience. That said, the HD+ is a nice piece of hardware. Slightly smaller than an iPad, the nine-inch touch screen is sharp, bright and responsive. Its 16GB of built-in storage is easily augmented with up to 32 GB on a micro SD card. Unfettered access to the Google Play Store means a greater degree of flexibility in application options. One ironic exception is the Nook for Android app. When attempting to load it, I received an error message says the app isn't compatible with the hardware, go figure.

If you're heavily invested in the Barnes & Noble / Nook ecosystem, this could definitely cramp your style. For me, it makes little difference as I mostly use the Amazon Kindle reading app on my various devices. This loaded fine, giving me instant access to my Kindle library. Other Android apps, including MS Office, loaded without a hiccup. Another minor shortcoming for some users is the tablet lacks a camera. Again, this is no big deal to me. It should also be noted that this tablet, unlike most earlier nooks—and most other Android-based tablets—does not use a standard micro USB cable for its data and power connection. Instead, it uses a proprietary connector that at a glance resembles the 32-pin connector that Apple used on its iPods, iPhones, and iPads until a couple of years ago. Fortunately, replacement cables are available inexpensively on eBay.

So, is the Nook HD+ with Cyanogenmod an iPad killer? Not quite, but it's no slouch. While it's arguably a bit ahead of a first-generation iPad, which lacks a camera and is itself hamstrung with an outdated OS, its capabilities and performance fall a bit short of even a second- or third-generation model, except when it comes to price. Used Nook HD+ tablets in good condition are readily available on eBay for well under $100, about half what a comparable iPad fetches. Therefore, dollar for dollar, you arguably can get a whole lot more tablet for your money with the Nook HD+. For the money, it is definitely worth considering.

Pros: large, sharp, responsive touch display and good performance, especially with Cyanogenmod.
Cons: No camera, proprietary data cable, locked down default OS, Nook apps not compatible with Cyanogenmod.

Eco friendly for the family

For reading, google searching, watching Netflix it is perfect for my 12, 13 yr olds. It cost a quarter of the new pads and has an excellent 9inch screen for reading and watching. Battery life is only 4hrs or so, but we only allow a max of 2 on any electronic device before plugging it in to charge anyway so it's all good.Read full review...
