As if they'd never left

For those who feel the entertainment industry doesn't yield any credibility to Adam West's and Burt Ward's portrayals of the Dynamic Duo, after the 2000 TV movie "Return to the Batcave", and the long-awaited home video release of the television series, this animated feature caps off the contrary - or should I say "capes off the contrary".

The basic story is Batman and Robin must square off with the Joker, Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman, just like the 1966 movie. There's an hilarious, over-the-top deathtrap which serves as a McGuffin (or red herring) to the main plot. Catwoman has drugged our hero to go to the dark side, much like the time she drugged Robin with Catophrenic. Throughout his transformation I found it heart-stopping. Please, not a mean, villainous Batman! It was a lot of fun holding my breath at times. I take this as a spoof of the topic of goofy, nice Batman of the 60s vs. the dark knight.

I won't go into the plot any further because spoilers will abound, but suffice it to say this is an adventure very worthy of the live action series, and this will make a fan wish the late 60s animated series were more like this treatment. The art is truly art. Our heroes and Alfred, Aunt Harriet, Commissioner, Chief, and all the gang are so beautifully drawn, you would think live action video was treated to look like animation.

Adam West does sound like a near 80 year-old sometimes, but don't let that distract you. Burt Ward sounds almost exactly like he did in 1966, and the voices of the Joker and the Riddler are spot-on, down to their trademark sinister laughs. The Penguin's voice work is pretty good, but not special. As it is, Penguin was never really my favorite of the 4 - he's kind of like the Ringo of the bunch. Julie Newmar's voice as Catwoman is purrfect in some scenes, but sort of wavers, but you love it when she's spot on.

I didn't really care for the special features, which were just a couple of brief featurettes having more to do with future Dark Knight projects than this incarnation of the Caped Crusaders themselves, but - what the hell - - it's a new adventure of Batman and Robin the way we know and love them.

Old meets new

I wasn't sure what to expect here, and was very pleasantly surprised. I loved the Adam West Batman as a child. But as an adult I found it rather silly. Batman in the old comics was to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Adam West's Batman could hardly strike fear. Laughter maybe, but not fear. Then came Dark Knight returns then Tim Burton's Batman. It was the character returning to his dark roots. So I know Adam West is a lot older now, so he couldn't really do a film, but with the magic of animation he could. This probably the BEST Adam West Batman of all. With the help of Catwoman's "Batnip" Bruce Wayne becomes dark, and EVIL. One line was lifted right out of Burton's Batman. When Batman confronts the criminal gang he says "You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!" And proceeds to pummel them Dark Knight style. It was old meets new, as of the newer Batman films. The animation is SUPERB! Adam West Batman's Gotham and all it's trappings are awesome. And Gordon, LOOKS like Gordon. Good movie!Read full review...
