Bookworm for GameBoy Advance - a MUST for any Bkwrm fan

Over the years, Majesco has taken full advantage of the Game Boy. They make one game, and as Nintendo releases a new Game Boy, Majesco re-releases the same game (cough cough Super Black Bass cough). They also obtain the rights to simple games, like Super Collapse II and, in this case, Bookworm.

You gotta ask yourself, "Why would any publisher want to go to the trouble to make a game and then charge $20 (original MSRP) that you can go to Yahoo Games and play for free?" Majesco certainly has done their fair share of bad games. But obtaining the rights to Bookworm was one of the smartest moves they've made, even if you can play it for free on Yahoo.

Anyone who has played Bookworm knows that it is a simple word game, like a Scrabble board with letters aligned into columns, and you are to form words out of the arrangement of letters. It's incredibly basic, yet incredibly addicting. It's tough to walk away. You think, "Okay, I'm only going to spell one more word and then I'm done." But then you notice another word. And another. Pretty soon, ten more minutes will pass unnoticed.

There are two reasons why this Game Boy version, which is exactly like the Yahoo Games version, makes Bookworm one of the best GBA games. First off, one of the best and most addictive Internet games has been made portable, so you can take it anywhere without the need for a PC. Secondly, Majesco released it for Game Boy Advance. Because of this, this game will work on any current generation Nintendo handheld. Granted, when this game was released (June 2004), the GBA was the only Nintendo handheld at the time. But it's still great that you can use it on any GBA or DS.

There are a few drawbacks to the game. Because it is a direct port of the Yahoo Games version, it is a single player game. I don't know how you could make a multiplayer of this game, and it doesn't detract from the game any; it just would have been a cool little bonus is all.

Also, unlike Texas Hold 'Em (also a great game) and all of the Cartoon Network games, Bookworm had a very limited production. If you didn't get this game in late 2004 or early 2005, you didn't get it at all. Very seldom can you find this game, and when you can, it comes at a pretty steep price.

Lastly, there is a small glitch in the game. My copy used to do it when I first got it, but it hasn't for a long time (fingers crossed). Between levels the game will automatically save your progress. Unfortunately, the game will occasionally freeze up as it's saving. What you end up having to do is turn off the game and turn it back on. Since the lock up occurred during a save, all of your progess is lost, which can be frustrating if you're score is in the millions.

There are some games that should just not be made portable - at least without adding SOMEthing to the mix (like, say, Elf Bowling 1&2). Then there are those games like Bookworm that, even without any add-ons, make you a happy gamer to know that you can take it anywhere. Obviously, not everyone can get into Bookworm. But those that do get into it and want to play it on the go, thanks to Majesco, you can.

Bookworm

I bought this game for my grandson, who lives in Ohio. His mother immediately used it to play a game. My grandson has sent me screenshots of the games he has played on it. He really enjoys it. This is exactly what he wanted.Read full review...

The best time passer and educational game at the same time.

bookworm is great word game, even if your vocabulary is limited. You can learn new words, just by trying different combinations of letters. The game will tell you is it is a word or not. It works flawlessly in game boy advance. I have had this game on my computers, and palm's and when I couldn't find it for my phone, I checked for other options. I was surprised to see one for the game boy advance my grand son had passed down to me a few years ago. Of course I purchased it right away and have been enjoying it ever since.Read full review...

Bookgame is Worth Duplicating Like a Good Pair of Shoes

This game is as great as you are a speller. It takes strategy and imagination to make good words into sentences, not just words. I took it a step farther, into other self- word challenges.

The thing I do not like about this game is that it may die suddenly after years of play. There are many games out there that NO LONGER 'SAVE' and that is a real pity-- especially that some sellers do not know or they cheat folks.

The game is worth good money. . . but ONLY if it works.

Learning is Fun!

Who said kids couldn't learn from a video game. They could play bookworm for hours. A game that have the player to find 3 or more letter words for points, it also rewards the player on well hidden words with bonus tiles and words. Go online to find it for free to play on your computer. Dell and yahoo has it and then come back to eBay for your kids one for Gameboy. I couldn't find it in any store for the Gameboy Advanced/Micro. Because you will want to play it on your PC yourself.Read full review...
