Breath of Fire 2 Deserves More Appreciation

(Quick Thoughts)

I LOVE the pace of Breath of Fire 2's combat. Though to Capcom's pleasure they will throw you into a nasty RNG early on. In the beginning parts of the game I fought battles with horse flies 6-7 times in a row. These things are way faster than you and they have a poison ability that will drive you out of items and AP.

The game has a good soundtrack but would benefit from a few more tunes added throughout various villages making each one more unique. Some villages will repeat the same tired track over and over again. Thankfully most of the tracks are damned good. Some pleasent, some on the edge of an intense battle.

Breath of Fire 2 is attractive for an "old game." Radiant sprites, detailed landscapes and plenty of cool monsters to fight make BoF2 feel vast and plentiful. All playable characters look really cool, and can all morph into something else visully stimulating to keep the interest levels there.

The Maze based nature of some of the dungeons can make the game very confusing after getting lost in random battles.

Fishing sucks. Go to Breath of Fire III if you care a lot about this element of the game. It's pretty much useless later on even though you can find two really rare items fishing. Later in time the hunting mini game is not worth it either. So a lack of consistency with the side quests which weren't even fully realized in the mid-90s.

Random tip: Chopchop can take out flies and smite soldiers in one hit.

Oh and the story is pretty good too. The main character Ryu and his shady friend Bow go on an adventure that turns them from common hoodlums to heroes of a planet being swallowed by evil. The jobs and tasks start off easy, but as you progress the enemies become much more challenging and the story turns into a much darker experience for the player.

Think about this: Some units don't get any good armor until the end of their individual story sequence. Which means each unit will suffer a different weakness until their problem is taken care of.

Thankfully your main character is a tank, and will largely be the dominant performer of your group for the entire game. Some may see this as a flaw, but he manages to keep the pace for the rest of your party with great attack power and defense. Your other characters will attack alongside him and cast magic spells with ability points. You can heal and change the status of both your units and the opponent.

If you haven't tried this game, you should!

Now, I'm an old school type of girl. I don't need a Playstation 3 to know a good game when I see one, although I would really like one to see what they've come up with next. I thought Breath of Fire was the greatest game ever, until they came out with the second one. Over the years I had played the first and third of the series. I never could find the 2nd or 4th. Now I have all 4, and it's still a toss up between the first and second. The story line is great, the characters are great. Everything about this game is great. Of course, it has the graphics of a Super Nintendo game, but that's to be expected. If you like the Breath of Fire series, the second one is definitely something you should try out.Read full review...

Everything exactly as pictured- the manual the box and the cartridge appeared as expected and the detailed pictures helped with the expectation. No surprises in inspection and the cartridge appears authentic. Packing was not spectacular but it doesn't appear to have impacted the item in any meaningful way.Read full review...
