An afterthought to Before and After Science

Some music sounds better on vinyl while others sound at least as good and occasionally better on CD (or Hi-Res Audio). Eno’s Before and After Science seemed assured of being an album best played on vinyl and particularly the half-speed master at 45 rpm. I was looking forward to that extra kick of fidelity. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but every track has an amazing fullness to the sound, a added spark to the electronics, and surprising that the more sparse tracks seem to have a more lush definition in the quietest parts. Tracks like Julie with.., and Energy Fools the Magician, and The Spider and I, they did not disappoint.

Worth the purchase just to get that feeling that I only get with vinyl that I am hearing the song again for the first time. Sound elements from memory that I might have imagined were there all along are now present and clear to the ear, often softly expanding into a pause or quiet musical moment. It is a brilliant album in any format.

A return to a Clarity that was analogue 12” 45’s.

Many still recall the Wealth of 12” Singles from the late 1970’s and 1980’s. These were often a single song, but the Sonic benefits are essentially the same here; you are listening at 45 r.p.m., there is more space between the grooves to put out more sound. I have NOT yet heard this Eno piece, but I can refer back to 2 songs “Summer of ‘82”, and “The Lunatics have taken over the Asylum” by FB3, who left “The Specials”. These 12” 45 discs are fantastic! I expect the same physics from this German set of Eno.Read full review...
