Wonderful read, couldn't put it down.

I bought this book because I loved the TV series. The experiences in the autobiography are even more interesting, heart-warming, horrific and disturbing. The insight into life in the East End during the 1950's, especially for women and their children, is priceless. I can highly recommend this book. You may, however, find it a little confronting if you have not experienced childbirth.Read full review...

Brilliant, moving and heartwarming, a story of life as it still is

Warm, funny and sad and often on the one page. Beautiful stories about love, compassion, fear and an inescapable acceptance of life as it is. One of the best books I have read for a long while.

Loved It

I watched the series and loved it.
The book is even better.
You just wonder how anybody survived back then.
It makes you laugh and cry.

Fascinating insight into the docklands in the 50's

Much as the tv series, but sometimes in more gritty detail, with fascinating photographs showing how the ships of the docks towered over the houses nearby. Well written as both a good read and a social history documentRead full review...

I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoyed the TV Series.

I bought this because I enjoyed the TV Series. I actually thought the book better than the series - it gave more detail and was a really good read.
