Better, but not perfect.

I must say the graphics take a hit in this one but are still quite good, but it's the audio that make it great from a presentation standpoint. Dialogue and weapon effects are quite impressive. I haven't messed with the solo mode so much but Black Ops zombies is so-so with the best already behind it (get your hardened/prestige editions kiddies). W/O those original maps, the mode loses it's appeal really fast! Of course combat training is an amazing addition, and certain offline modes allow you to fiddle around with pro perks right off the bat! Unfortunately, online is riddled with bugs. Not hacks, just terrible host selection/migration, unstable server connections, and other quirks regarding the clan tags and playercards. I don't think the customization was well utilized here, and the pro perks are kind of mundane. In a way, they're harder to aquire, and worse, many aren't worth the trouble, such as Hardened, Flack Jacket, and even Steady Aim Pro, just for the simple fact that they aren't much more powerful than the standard variants. Why would I go through a half-dozen plus runs of Nuketown/Demolition/Search & Destroy just to be able to absorb infinite Flammenwerfer (ha, you can tell what I like!) damage with my pro armor, when I can still resist RC-XD's, Grenades, RPG's, and yes, full immunity to 1 (one) enemy claymore (2'll get ya, though! :p)? I thought so, and the difference is a measly 6000XP, and 3000 point cost for upgrade! I'll tell you I'm 3rd prestige, so I've seen much horror and triumph on the global battlefield, and when the connection is stable this game is very, very balanced! As stated before, there are work-arounds (counters) to almost everything, like the lethal claymore (flack jacket/hacker), the SEMI-AUTOMATIC SPAS WITH SUPPRESSOR, and even dogs can be shot fairly easily (have I even died three times???) Just get your Ghost up because when they GET TO THA CHOPPA!, it could be the only thing to save your hide!Read full review...

COD - Black Ops

I became a huge fan of this series after playing the highly addictive online multi-player game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Black Ops was released and I wanted to get some feedback from players after checking the game out before I purchased it. There was a lot of mixed reviews but it seemed that everybody I usually play online with had stopped playing Modern Warfare 2 and had started playing Black Ops so I purchased it. At first glance the graphics aren't as crisp as MW2, the online play however provides options where you can purchase the weapons and accessories that you feel comfortable playing with instead of only being able to unlock them by leveling up. Overall the levels are fun to play and it seems that whether you are a beginner or a veteran this game has a pretty level playing field.Read full review...

I don't understand how some people can think it is bad

I read the reviews elsewhere on this and I was not sure if I was going to get it.
I think they were wrong.
I own Call of Duty Modern WarFare 2 for the PlayStation 3.
Reviews said Call of Duty 3 was "More of the Same".
I don't know if it is the PS3 or the Duty 3, but this game is alot better than Duty 4 on my PS3. The Smoke effects are better. The Water is amazing... Damn shot again starring at the water...
I noticed something in Resistance Fall of Man that is also present in this game, Everything is alive. The Grass whisps in the wind, this makes the environment come alive.
I think Resistance does the Ambiance better, but it is nicely done here too.
Swinging the Sixaxis as if to do a Rifle Butt causes your on screen character to do a Rifle Butt... Cool...
The Driving Sequences using the Sixaxis takes a little getting used to, however you can still drive via the Analog stick as well.
Graphics are Very nice, I did not see the Frame Rate Problems spoke of by the Reviewer. The Sound is very good. I did not give the Sound a 10 though because after playing Resistance where there is more clips of audio from the AI characters, I found hearing the same thing over and over again to be very "Last Gen" of Course my "Next Gen" 360 has the same problem. I think it stems from people starting to use the Extra capacity available on the BluRay disc.

Free Online Thanks to Sony. Goodbye XBox Live. Until Microsoft gives Live for Free, I will not renew. The Microsoft Fanboys keep trying to convince me that the Xbox Live is somehow better, well... after using them both I can not see the "greatness" that constitutes $50 a year.

If you liked Call of Duty 4, You will love Call of Duty 6 MW2.

Call Of Duty Black Ops

Black Ops is a first-person shooter. The player assumes the role of a foot soldier who can wield various firearms, of which two at a time can be carried; throw grenades and other explosives; and use other equipment as weapons. A player close enough to an enemy can kill with one knife blow. A character can take three stances: standing, crouching, or prone; each affects rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. The player can dive prone from a standing position when running. The player can momentarily sprint but will then grow tired. The screen glows red to indicate damage to a player's health, which goes away over time. When the character is within the blast radius of a live grenade, a marker indicates the direction of the grenade, helping the player to flee or throw it back. Not bad but not prefect either!

I like the story mode and some of the online play as well but try playing it on Veteran you will smash your controller due to the lagging crap! Treyarch should retire because they really did mess up this game! And what's the deal with Jimmy Kimble and the rest of the Holly Wood actor's in that commercial? Well you have to play it for yourself in order to get the real feel of the game as to how bad it turned out to be! Shame on you Treyarch! And Activision shame on you for even releasing this game when it wasn't published the right way! By Getting rid of the lagging issues and Bugs! as well as those damn cheater's! So I give this game a 3- out 5! Also parent's what the heck is your kids doing in a game that is rated M for mature seriously!..Educate yourself by not allowing your kid's in this game! I think it's good and not so good.

So we got this on Friday and though not completely familiar with it yet, I am going to post anyway. So far the career mode is just ok with me. Seems like WAY too many movies and even though playing on "regular", seems pretty easy to die trying to find out what you need to do to advance. It does save pretty conveniently though so not that big of a deal. Action is good and smooth although we did run into a problem in one area and had to re-start the level to go back and get the game to let us advance.

The online mode is great but it seems to me, and I'm not sure why this is, that the maps are "crowding" me. Not sure how to explain that other than it seems different than previous issues. Still learning the maps so that may be a factor in that feeling but all in all the maps are much bigger (aka MAG) which I happen to like.

Zombie doesn't do much for me but I do like the training modes that you can set up a multitude of ways and use all weapons and practice poppin heads.

We're PS3ers here so look for us and we'll play some. We're "FreeAirBandit" and "Young_R_19".

SO, we've had this now for a little longer and I have to say it has gone downhill fast. As I said before we play PS3's here and this game at our house, and as reported many other places such as the official COD Black Ops forums, this game is crashing our system constantly. The lag and server issues with his game in it's current state make this game uplayable here. There is no way to finish 2 games in a row as you are booted or worse, the game put the console into a hard reset state where nothing works and the only remedy is to hold the power button with the game loaded and the laser frozen. This is the worst thing you can do for a console. Reports abound that many systems have been ruined by this and that Sony is investigating reports that BO is causing these failures.

Use caution with this game and if you experience these issues, I'm afraid at this time there's not much you can do about it as you will get no relief from Treyarch, from Sony nor from the retailer where you bought the game. Basically, you just dumped $60 into something for which half of the product does not work. It will not effect your single player offline gameplay, but then again, how many times can you play a game through? I know we like the online multiplayer more than the campaign modes, so for us, this thing is sitting in it's case in the corner until they can get some new code patches released. COD Black Ops, AMAZING!

Call of Duty Black Ops lives up to it's reputation as the greatest selling game of all time. By far the best first person shooter I have ever seen or played, highly recommended for players with these gaming interests. Smooth graphics and controls make for an opportunity to enjoy the game and concentrate less on what button to push or steady movement. Most people dislike these types of games because they are hard to control, such as the steady aim and quick movement, but this game takes away those stresses more than any game ever! And don't worry about button confusion on your controller, they are evenly and smartly distributed on the PS3 controller to make it easy to be quick on your feet. 2 player online on split screen is awesome, finally a chance to have a team member in your house as well as worldwide using the playstation network. Campaign mode is great for the 1 player gaming with a storyline and point, for the times that online gets boring. All around I personally feel that this game is a breakthrough in first person shooters and brings fun and realism to this style of gaming. Five stars!Read full review...

Black Plops

This game has really good potential and has great modes to keep things interesting, but the multi-player fails to deliver the advancements that should have been made since Modern Warfare 2.

The most enjoyable features of the game are the campaign, the main menu, the split screen options, and Zombie Mode. At the bottom of the barrel is the on-line multi-player games.

As far as FPS campaigns go, Black Ops is shaping up to have the richest set of campaign and Easter eggs that I've seen in a long while. Though the campaign lacks some features that would really make it shine, the story is told in such a way that makes you want to play though the onslaught of enemies just to advance the storyline. Where the campaign sputters is the lack of complete environmental immersion and destructible objects. Most of the interior scenes so far seem like 2D drawings of a room. If I lob a grenade at a wall where a desk is sitting, the papers stay neatly stacked next to the telephone on the desk. On the upside, shoot through a window or plate glass wall, and the glass shatters. Shoot at a mainframe tape library, and the equipment explodes. Treyarch did a good job, not a great job.

The main menu.... oh my goodness..... the main menu.... This is the best menu is game history, and is my primary enjoyment of the game due to the link to the campaign. It wasn't until I started playing the campaign that I realized that the main menu is a torture room (more politically correct: interrogation room). Then, I found that you can break free from your restraints and walk around the main menu.... from there, I was just a button press from locating what reminds me of a C-Shell UNIX system. Navigating around the directories, I found some executable binary commands that unlocked a whole new aspect of the game: hacking. Reminiscent of Enter the Matrix, only better. You have access to a computer with multiple accounts and mailboxes, and the teaser to be able to remote login to other computers on the network. You can even enter some commands that unlock additional zombie modes as well as my favourite part of the game: a tops-down 1980s style arcade game. There's also a popular text-based adventure game built into the menu. The programmers were really geeking back to their roots with this one, and if it weren't for the shoddy multi-player, this game would have ranked higher.

The split-screen options are really nice for off-line co-op play, but to sweeten the pot, you can play split-screen in Zombie's mode, too! This is such a refreshing feature and it gives you twice-the-fun when your friend (i.e. girlfriend) wants to jump into the Zombie fray with you! How sweet is THAT?!?

Which leads to Zombies: what else is there to say about Zombies? It's really addicting, and multi-layered as well. Now there is the challenge of turning on the power and linking teleporters (which have their own Easter Egg qualities about them!).

Alas, the part of the game that brings this review from an excellent or good, to just an average rating, is the multi-player. If multi-player looked and felt like the campaign, the rest of my game library would be gathering dust. Unfortunately, the small advancements that Teryarch has made since their lay foray into a FPS title don't seem in-line with where the Industry is heading. While the gameplay is enjoyable, its just not up to par.

Its Addicted

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare, but the twists that Treyarch throws in work well. My biggest issue with the multi player is that the new Wager Matches, while fun in their own right, don’t compare favorably to the high-quality and addictive leveling system and game modes from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Single-player is as exhaustingly fast-paced as ever with large set pieces that try to take the attention off of the lackluster AI of both friends and enemies. Top-notch as always. Voice acting expertly delivers the story that’s presented in an innovative way. Plot gets just a little bogged down towards the middle. Some design issues hurt mission direction.

8.5 Graphics
Some strange texture issues pop up every now and again and some levels are more impressive than others. I enjoyed the wider array of colors than what’s in most COD games and some scripted events rock.

9.5 Sound
There’s maybe one line in the entire game that could be called cheesy. Everything else you hear is a true delight and the soundtrack fits in with the events of the game nicely. Time to crank it.

8.0 Gameplay
You can’t help but feel that both the single- and multiplayer could use some new life beyond just adding bigger and badder explosions (like smarter AI). Still, Call of Duty provides plenty of fun.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
There’s more content than most other shooters. Customization is massive; from Create-A-Class to private matches online. Multiplayer will take you months even if the new content comes at some expense.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a must buy. Pros AND Cons but still a great game

My favorite Call of Duty will always be the very first one for the PC. Nothing matches up to that. But if you want the next best Call of Duty on my list, look at Black Ops. While Treyarch did a poor job of "nerfing" every gun that the community didn't like, it did show that they listen; which is always a good thing in my book. Zombies made a comeback in this game, and once again, it was amazing. The DLC zombie maps just made the game mode that much better, keep many players busy for hours, and maybe even days, without breaks or sleep. I wish Treyarch did a better job with the guns in this, but overall the game was still outstanding. The sound is vivid, and the game has many aspects that will still amaze you.Read full review...
