Amazing super wide images

The most important thing to remember about these Lenses is they are FULL FRAME. Super Wide angle lenses. Canon released these lenses in 1992, and they are still a current model, there are lots of them second hand on ebay!!
Much wider than our eyes and very sharp, with minimal geometric distortion, OK for architecture shots. It is an interesting lens due to its exaggeration of perspective as compared with the common full frame wide angles of 28mm or 35mm. This lens is perhaps the first lens that actually portrays a feel of the exciting world of Ultra-wide angle photography. In other words, you have to see the image produced by such a focal length through the SLR's viewfinder to see what its all about.
View angle on 35mm and full-frame cameras
94º diagonal.
62º vertical.
84º  horizontal.
This super wide perspective has interesting effect on sky and clouds. We often see the effects on TV shows which include atmospheric landscape and skyscapes. The front element is fixed when focusing so its possible to use polarising filters, the vertical view angle means you will often get lots of sky included, polarising filters are great for it. The front ring is metal not plastic so if used carefully will not strip but if you get a metal filter mount cross threaded it will be very difficult to remove.
Keeping the camera level is also important to prevent sloping verticals.
This is a lens to love and master.
I use mine on my 5Dc and love it, it balances nicely with the heavy 5Dc body, this and my 24mm F2.8 are my most used lenses on my 5Dc.
On an Crop sensor EFS camera they will fit and operate perfectly but as the Canon Kit zoom lens is 17mm F3.5 (28mm full frame equivalent) it would be overkill to use such a lens. I did put it on my 50D for a quick test, it works but dont bother

Good value if you get for the right price

For the money, it's nice and sharp and f2.8 is very practical. Vignetting on FF inevitable but in most cases looks better with than without, if you have a centre subject. Bokeh is a little artifact ridden so needs some post Photoshopping to get the best out of it. If you want better then you need an L lens. Read full review...

20mm is wide enough

A very sharp lens, often overlooked in favour of a ultra wide zoom. Been there, done that and have returned to this prime lens.
