Excellent and Reasonably Priced Deep Sky Astrophotography Alternative

Was looking for something more versatile than a dedicated astrophotography lens/telescope, but no one makes a similar lens as this Cannon with an E mount for Sony and anything close was exceedingly expensive. Found this lens and using a Metabones adapter, the lens works very well with my full frame Sony camera. Images are sharp and the lens is faster than dedicated telescope lenses.

Not a deal breaker by any means, but wish it had an external aperture ring. This lens can be used in fully automatic (aperture and focus) or manual mode. Manual aperture is done using the camera controls and focus with the focus ring. Image stabilization is impressive. Other than the price of filters because the face of the lens is quite large, I have found no real negatives, considering it is not being used natively on a Cannon camera.

For sports and wildlife shots, you won't regret it!

Are you shooting surfing, air shows, sports, nature, zoo, and wildlife?

Here’s why sport and wildlife photographers rejoice with the development of the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM prime lens. Its lightweight design allows for easy carrying. But, its best feature is the ability to photograph sharp, clean images of distant subjects in lower light situations, better than most zoom lenses. And extra sharpness means you can even crop photos for better close ups of your subject. If you really want to splurge and you’re in need of even more light, you might also want to consider the 300mm f/2.8L IS USM zoom lens. But for the money this is the best lens in this affordable price range. While a zoom lens, like the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is very tempting, there are great reasons why you may want to step up to this beautiful prime lens with fixed focal length and wide f/4 aperture capability.

Why you should consider the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM prime lens:

First, imagine you’re at your child’s evening soccer game. You have only the field lights for illumination. Your son or daughter is too far away to use your flash. You raise the lightweight, image-stabilized lens. The f/4 aperture lets in more light than you would get with the zoom lens (the zoom lens has only f/5.6 at 300mm), and your shutter speed stays up just long enough for you to focus and freeze the action shot you’ve been waiting for all year. You’re a hero! Now you have the perfect shot to blow up into a beautiful poster for your son or daughter’s room. How do they feel? Proud? Happy? You bet. That’s a memory you will cherish for years to come and you’ll know you made the right decision buying this lens.

Or what if you’re on vacation in the Rocky Mountains? You’ve been hiking. It’s close to dusk and the animals are starting to stir. All of a sudden a big horned sheep comes out from behind an outcropping. You raise your lightweight Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM image-stabilizing lens. Focus and shoot. Wow! Got it! This amazing, hard to capture animal is yours for a lifetime. Your friends are jealous…they want to take a great picture like that! Their lens wouldn’t focus in the low light and after carrying it all day long and waiting for this single moment they lost the shot. Now aren’t you glad you made the investment in just the perfect lens for this application?

Now you can understand why Southern Photo recommends the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM prime lens for the sports, wildlife, and surfing enthusiast.

Ryan says, “I purchased a fixed focal length lens as I started to build my camera system and I’ve never regretted it. You won’t either!” Be sure to consider how much you will give up if you don’t acquire at least one perfectly matched lens for the things you love the most.

An Oldie But A Goodie

NON-IS REVIEW: This is 1 of my 9 "L" lenses. I've had this lens since 2012 and it has proven to deliver near excellent quality photos. While there are other lenses which deliver improved images, i.e., the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and related 400mm f/2.8L IS II, but those photos come at a price. If you're going to be outdoors in relatively good light (so you can shoot fast, making IS a non-issue), this lens will meet or exceed your expectations. Your bank account & arms will appreciate it also. BUT, since the lens is discontinued, Canon will not service it, so you'll have to find a person who can calibrate it if it needs it.Read full review...

Great lens for a great price?

This lens is sharp and very colorful. It can freeze your subject and make it stand out from its background. It also has a nice background blur. And don't forget, it is image stabilized so you can handhold it a slow than the prescribed 1:1 zoom:to:shutter speed ratio. That is a BIG plus! If you can get a good deal on one, it becomes a no-brainer. -CwhRead full review...

Unbeatable quality and value

Wonderful lens! Even though it lacks IS, it is very usable given the quality results with newer cameras which handle higher ISOs very well. Construction is first rate and handling is a real pleasure. Very usable with the Canon 1.4x teleconverter. Image quality? It's an "L" lens! These lenses very much deserve their stellar reputation. UnbeatableRead full review...

Beyond Expectations

The lens is mint, as described, and the focus is almost instantaneous. The older IS system works very well, and I am getting sharp images at much lower shutter speeds than expected. I would highly recommend this lens for wildlife, portraiture, landscape, and especially any time you want a nice creamy background. I would buy this lens again.Read full review...

Canon EF 300 mm F4 L IS lens is GREAT!

This lens is great for the price and build quality. The auto focus of this lens on my EOS 7D mark 2 is a BIG WOW! I've had other long lenses by third party manufacturers that were slower in the focusing department and this lens blows them away. The image stabilisation is second to none when hand held shots at 1/60th of a second come out like it was on a tripod. This is my fourth "L" lens and they are worth the extra bucks.Read full review...

Professional Results at a Reasonable Price

For the money this is a very good lens. I bought mine used and I am very happy with the results. Photos are tack sharp. The lens is big but still highly portable. On my 30D it is about a 480mm and I get great results. The only downside is this is not image stabilized so you'll need higher shutter speeds to prevent blur. Good Value.Read full review...

Sharp pictures, but clunky loud focusing

I have shot some great pics with this lens. Nice and sharp, and shot some great portraits with it as well as wildlife with a 1.4 tele.
On the downside the focusing motor is loud and clunky sometimes seems to jar the image as it jumps in the viewfinder. It searches more than my 70-200 L, and not nearly as smooth or fast. I find myself manually focusing initially.Read full review...
