Good lens for slightly older Canon DSLR cameras

If your Canon DSLR camera is a slightly older one, like the

Canon D30 (released year 2000 - NOT the 30D)or
Canon D60 (released 2002- NOT the 60D)or
Canon 10D (released 2003)

then Canon's EF 22-55f/4-5.6 lens is an all-around lens for you. Because the above cameras can only take Canon's EF lenses; and these cameras have a crop factor of around 1.6; meaning the 22mm widest focal length on this lens is the same 22mm for Canon film SLRs. But with the crop factor it multiplies by 1.6; it becomes 35mm for the DSLRs above; and so the 55 mm becomes 88mm.

Following the fact above, I also have the Canon's classic EF 1.8 50mm lens, and it becomes 80mm when I use it with my D60. Great for portraits, but not too useful for family / group / room pictures. It's also the same reason why those EF-S kit lenses are 18-55mm, if used with APS-C camera bodies, give out 28-88 roughly focal length.

Again, bad news is D30, D60, 10D owners can't use these EF-S lenses.

But I've got good news for you! This 22-55 lens gives us a nice range of wide (around 35mm) to good close up or zoom shots (80mm).

This is also great if you are shooting indoors, and you don't have enough room to back out of. The 35mm wide gives you good coverage.

So what I did, I purchased this 22-55 lens! Image quality is very nice, sharp and not-too-loud colors.

And with affordable eBay prices, You can easily find one that fits your budget.

Meanwhile, I am going to hang on to my wonderful little 22-55 as my "casual" lens, and use my 50mm (which becomes 80mm) for portrait shots of my family!

Happy shooting!

Canon EF 22-55mm f/4-5.6 USM Lens

This is one of canons little secrets. Like the 50mm f1.8 it is a plastic mount. Don't let that fool you. It is a USM lens. This is the second one of these I have had. I hope this one is as good as the first. This was the first lens I purchased to put on my Canon 10D. With the 1.6 crop factor it still gives a good range. I used it to shoot an event and also used one of my 35mm film cameras with a 28-70 F2.8 constant aperture lens. Used Identical Metz potato masher flash units. I shot the same shots back to back with each camera and I decided from that day forward that reasonable digital photography had arrived to compete with 35mm film. This lens was originally designed for APS cameras. Yes APS camera is almost or exactly the same as 1.6 image sensors. It was also designed to cover full frame cameras. If you are looking a super lightweight lens for backpacking this is the lens. Color saturation and sharpness are much better than average. Overall a good lens to have around.Read full review...

Vintage look

Not very sharp, makes colors look vintage. Decent kit lens level of shapness. The raw images have a “vintage” color look or feel. Small and lightweight. Great value for the price!

for the money, decent lens

Great for still photos and portraits. Build quality is cheap but what do you expect for the price. Overall, what I expected. Wide angle covers a good range but again, overall, cheap lens.
