Great cheap lens, maybe could be wider.

This basic lens is basically good. I do wonder why this third gen lens still starts at 18mm; That's 29mm on Canon EF-S. 17mm would have been a true 28mm, actually slightly wider (27mm). The competition does fine at a 1.5 crop, Canon should make this lens a little wider.

Not much more too say, it does have noticeable chromatic aberrations, but this is easily corrected.

STM means it focuses silently, it'll catch you out as an unusual experience, focusing silently, and it takes a while to get used to.

Reasonable lens for its price

This lens does what Canon says. Its a low end Lens of lesser quality so, handle them with care.
Store it in a non moisture environment as, fungus can get in between the two front optics although, the front optics can be removed its impossible to clean between the two optics.
The internal focus motor does tend to suffer from excess use.

Great starter lens, turns out spectatular photos. Nice low price for fun.

Great buy, I bought it second hand due to being a newbie to SLR photography so didn't want to invest lots of money. Have already had an experiement with this lens and have turned out what I think are awesome photos. So much more than an automatic camera as there is room for creative experimentation. Good starting piece. People have also recommended another lens, either zoom or macro to complete a basic kit. No dislikes just need to get used to the size ofthe lens and body after using a small camera. Price wise this is a very good buy. although if you want something more creative you will need to pay for it. I can't wait until I have enough confidence to expand my abilities with a bigger lens. Excellent purchase.Read full review...

Great value

I love this lens. It is high quality, and shoots very sharp images. A must for any beginner photographer!
The only thing I've found that is not 100% to my liking is; the manual focus is quite limited, and the silent auto focus can fool you into thinking it's not working! Apart from that, it is my go-to, standard lens for my camera! I would definitely recommend this lens as part of anyone's camera kit.Read full review...

A good lens for the beginner or casual photographer.

Good price and good lens.
Yes, a professional or active enthusiast can get more expensive 'better' glass, but this lens does not purport to be for professionals.

Canon 18-55 IS - Lightweight budget lens - limited usefullness

Likes : It is light and compact. Has a useful wide angle at 18mm. Relatively cheap.
Dislikes : Cheapish feel. 55mm zoom is not that useful outdoors.
Would I buy one again? Personally, probably not. I bought a 17-85mm USM. It is used 95% of the time, except for when I use a bigger telephoto.
If you are shooting inside a lot, consider the 18-55 - it could be useful!

I ordered the wrong one

It didn’t fit, so I can’t comment on the lens. My own fault, I ignored the “S” after the EF.

YES AND NO

The lens itself is great, however it is not fully compatible with Canon electronics - and it causes other aspects to stop functioning
