A new owners opinion

From a physical handling perspective, the camera could use a little more right hand contact surface to avoid unnecessary pressure on rear buttons and dials. The camera "on" button is not easy to activate for a casual operation. A somewhat concerted effort is required to turn it on and off.
The camera seems to always slightly over expose daylight shots. Operationally, it is just a little faster than some other digi-cams I've used but not DSLR fast. The view finder is too small to use if you wear glasses but Ok otherwise.
It is not in the least intuitive for the casual shooter but filled with professional operations and technical gagetry. But, it also retains many earlier "canned" photographic modes familiar to other G camera owners. The movie mode is a disappointment when lesser cameras offer a hi-def movie mode.
One thing I really like about the G-10 is how fast it boots up so you can begin to shoot immediately. The 3" screen also offers good off-angle viewing but is difficult to use in bright light. I really like the lense quality and the 14.7MP resolution. I love the quality of my older G-5 for overall picture quality and that goes for my new G-10 as well. There is definitely more to play with on this camera so if you like flexibility and want to move up to a point and shoot with lots of fun things to learn. This is your camera.

Back up to DSLR

I have not owned a point and shoot in 6 years, since I purchased the original 300D. I have had most of the xxxD line up, 20D, 40D, 5D, and now shoot with 5DII and some good glass. However after reading the luminous landscapes article on g10 http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kidding.shtml, when he shot and printed at iso 80, and compared 13x19 prints with a medium back, I decided to give it a try for a small, leave it in the car, take it any where solution. besides it has video.

Initial impressions.
Positives:
Excellent built, solid, nice finish.
Good startup time.
excellent knobs, including ISO.
Good menu system, esp if you are used to canon DSLR.
Decent LCD.
Perfect size, pocketable.
IS works well.
Good Dof (as expected) even wide open, with good landscape results at f4, and 28mm

Negatives. Completely useless view finder. you can see the lens through viewfinder, its very dim and just about useless.
Movie mode not in 16x9 format, very surprising.
Image in 4x3 format, instead of 3x2. Its just odd to me.

Image quality.
I shoot in raw, convert to dng in LR, and process.
Iso 80 is about what 5dII does at iso 800. Iso 200 is a little worse than 3200, and 400 is about iso 6400.
The dynamic range is very very unforgiving, compared to a dslr. It is very easy to blow the highlights, and its not recoverable in raw. I would say it has at least 2 less stops on the high light end. The images are also a lot less forgiving when it comes to post processing. they posterize more easily, noise in shadow creeps in even at iso 80 with any exposure/fill light increase.
Detail is surpizingly good, at low iso, throughout the zoom range.

Canon PowerShot G10

The reason I bought the Canon G10 was to replace the G9 that all of a sudden quit on me 13 months after I bought THAT camera. To say the least I was not happy. Several others have had this same problem and I read where one person got an explanation from Canon that it's due to downloading the images from camera to computer. It burns out the circuitry in the G9. I'm hoping Canon does something for me and the others because of falty workmanship.

Meanwhile, the G10 has several improvements over the G9. A wider lens, several new modes, more pixels and in my opionion an improved body.

What I don't like: To make the zoom wider they took away from the telephoto end. Also it's hard to find a replacement battery. I can't find another battery (anywhere) locally and will have to order online. I didn't have a probloem finding a backup battery with the G9.

Opening the box.

I have been upgrading my Canon Powershot line forever. When I saw this at my niece's wedding I knew it was next in line.
Upon opening the box I could see another fine product from Canon. The camera is well built, has a great viewing screen and some marvelous options that are new to the line. Face recognition is really cool.
The pictures are crisp and the shutter is super fast. If you are looking to replace an SD Series, I would suggest not to as this model is slightly more bulky and heavy. It will not slip into your pocket. But if you have an IS Series or even the older G Series, I would say that this guy is without a doubt way ahead.
In brief, I give it "2 Thumbs Up"......NF

Canon PowerShot G10 14.7 Megapixel

I personally like how I shopped around before making any final purchases, hoping to find the best deal around. The camera itself was all I had hopped for. While it is a step above from a typical point and shoot it does still open and upload pictures as such. The reasoning behind purchasing this camera was to become familiar with different ISO settings, Light Meter, Shutter speed, F-stop, ETC... Much like everything I was told before purchasing the camera, its a very step by step towards owning an intermediate camera such as the G10 before owning a more high performance camera. I am pleased to say, the photo quality is far great than I every expected, and navigation is like all other Canon's I've owned.Read full review...

Canon G12 repair (UK location)

My G12 had failed with the lens in the extended position and would neither retract nor extend. On switch-on the camera came up with a "lens failure & please restart" type of message and made a strange noise too.

The repair was done very quickly, with an email received on the day it had been received and repaired. It was immediately sent back to me. With the delays in postage overseas both ways it only took a couple of weeks in total. It has taken longer to get cameras repaired in the nearest city to me, 10 miles away!

I am impressed by the service and do not hesitate to recommend it to others.

I have only had the camera back for a few weeks but it has been working perfectly in every way.

My G-10 came quickly.

I have been using a 6 year old camera and decided to step up to something better, I take lots of pictures and some go on line so i need a camera that will deliver. Can't tell how much I like the pictures.. I have to get a memory card first wich was'nt mentioned in any adds or descriptions and I think it should be for those who don't know. If I had Known I could have purchased one at the same time,I'm in a very rual area and depend on delivaries. I do like the features and am looking forward to get a clear shot of my Grandson!Read full review...

Canon G10 Digital Camera

I searched for a quality always-available camera to use in place of my heavier Canon 20D SLR and one to match in robustness which I am familar with. It is a dream to use and the ergonomic attention to it's design/use was reviewed carefully based upon the G9 preceding it. I like the weight and the optical viewfinder (a must) which helps the usage of the valuable image stablizer for slow shutter application. The exposure compensation location is located effectively as is the ISO dial. There is much to learn from this lovely beast to appreciate the full application of controls if one wishes.

I would be happier if there was a flip screen like my dependable Canon A620 but such is coming, I predict, protecting the lCD and to permit low angle and unobtrusive shooting. A highly recommended second camera.

Canon has done it again...

The Canon G series has always been about quality images with flexible shooting capabilities. The new Canon G10 certainly delivers in both of those areas. The image quality is incredible. The Canon lens is one of the best on a mid-size point and shoot. The flexible shooting modes are what really make this camera stand apart though. It allows almost all the capabilities of a basic dSLR in half the size. It has all the favorite Canon auto scene modes along with the ability to shoot in Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and full Manual modes. It even allows you to manually focus, although I have not fallen in love with this feature because it is not the best. For a point and shoot it has a great minimum aperture of 2.8, however I will say that on my Nikon D90, the same aperture gives a much shallower depth of field. The zoom is decent and will allow you to cover most of your shooting situations. The thing I love most about this camera is the size. True, it is much bulkier than most point and shoots, but compare image quality and shooting flexibility and there is nothing on the market to match this. If you don't want to lug around a big dSLR for an afternoon with the family, you can just throw the G10 in a backpack or purse without taking much room and adding a lot of weight. I have been extremely happy with my purchase and would recommend this camera to anyone who is a somewhat experienced photographer or just an enthusiast. There is a learning curve to it if you haven't used Canon before, but my guess is that if you are buying this camera you are pretty familiar with Canon and the excellent quality cameras they produce.Read full review...
