Canon's Superb Flash!
My first flash was the Canon 540ez--a great flash itself!
The 580ex does an EXCELLENT job of lighting the subject with the right amount of light. I photographed a wedding reception where yellowish-golden lighting was used in the ballroom and we wanted to keep that hue in the pictures. The flash DID NOT wash out/away any of that hue! The subject all looked natural and robust! (I was using a Canon T5 camera body for this shoot as I had not purchased the Canon 6d yet--but I have as no this writing and look forward to using this flash with it)
DO READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL!!
ONLY by knowing how the flash works (along with the camera, too!) can one get what they hope to achieve! Knowing how to adjust flash strength, knowing it's coverage distance, etc. can one REALLY benefit from using this flash. Knowing how and why to change the F-stop on your camera, the shutter speed, how to change the flash settings, etc. goes a VERY LONG WAY
The flash is not really heavy once you spring to action. The "energy-save" feature is a HUGE plus! I shot about 100 pics that night. Two weeks earlier, I photographed a "friends-only" gathering where I shot between 150-200 pics---USING THE SAME BATTERIES AND SAME 580EX FLASH!! Let me tell you---I'm still using the same 4 "AA" alkaline batteries (trust me when I say, "The brand of batteries DON'T matter--because they don't! I use Energizer, Ray-O-Vac, or Duracell. Just DON'T mix then in the flash.)
Using the bounce ability of the flash produced some very good shots! NO shadows to talk about. The make-up jobs on the women were hi-lighted in detail due to the flash and the pictures were as looking at professional models wearing Hollywood-level make-up. Good Job, ladies!
Canon 580ex is not hard to use. Learn the settings. Learn YOUR CAMERA!!
I"m going to use a set-up of three flashes soon and will write a review on that particular ability of the Canon 580ex.Read full review...

A great accessory
This flash not only greatly increases the scope of work of the photographer but also frees him from the hassle of having to work out the parameters for each shot. Everything is taken care of so you can concentrate on the subject. Altogether a nice experience to have it on your cameraRead full review...

Wonderful flash. User friendly, started using it right out of the box. The master and slave options made this a buying feature for me.
Lightweight and user friendly

Older but still great flash.
I bought it for my older EOS 5D mk1 camera.
At a good price it delivers professional results and compatibility with other studio devices.
The use is simple and intuitive, with no compatibility issues with the newer non-Canon (E)TTL flash units.Read full review...

It's a deal at today's prices
It's an older version that can be picked up cheaply. It works great with my 7D MK II and 5D MK III. It can be used as a master to control slaves. Set up is easy. Just look up the manual and push buttons. A pro flash at knock off Chinese copy prices.Read full review...

Great flash Great value
Once Canon's top of the line flash is still a great flash. Now that it has been replaces the used prices for the flash make it an outstanding value as well.

After having tried it both indoor and out door it works as I expected it.
There are multiple options and you can let the flashlight or camera manage it all which is the easiest, or you can use it the difficult way by set it up as you want it to.

good for the $$
not as good as my 580ex ii, but for the $400 price difference, good for light photography.
