I thought this was a very enlightening book about not only Cleopatra, but the era in which she lived in general. It gave insight not only about the different roles women played in Eygptian history, but Rome as well. She gives us a general sense about that paticular time in history and the roles that people played. I would highly recommend reading it to anyone who likes that era. I came away with a better understanding of not only her, but the Ptolemies as a dynastic family from Alexander the Great. The only criticism I would offer is that after a couple of hundred years, I would find it hard to separate the Hellenistic Ptolemies from the Eygptians. Other than that, I highly recommend this book. I found it very fascinating and easy to read and not bogged down with historical data (yet available) that detracted from its readability. Well researched chronicle of Cleopatra's life

One of the mos famous woman ruler in the Ancient World and little actual records. Schiff weaves a good biography with contemporaneous accounts. Filled in a lot of areas of activity I was unaware of and gave me an understanding of survival in those harsh days.Read full review...

Still reading...but so far it is very informative...Good scholarship on a subject that is rife with historical contradiction. The author clearly struggled with these contradictions in history, and does her best in setting the record straight.
