two-time failure
The first one I got didn't work correctly from the beginning. (It was plugged into the same outlet as a working 9116 charger.) I plugged it in to a different outlet to see if that would help, and it shorted out - snap, flash, smoke. I returned it for a replacement, which worked for about 6 weeks and then simply failed. A 9116 charger I bought at the same time is chugging along with no problem. I hope it lasts three years like the original 9116 that came with the tools did. I've ordered another 9116 so I can have two batteries charging. Not trying the 9226 again.Read full review...

Just a couple of days prior to ordering this charger, I took a chance on an older 18V 1/2” drive impact driver at a rummage sale. Of course the battery was dead, but for the price ($10) it was worth the risk. So far, so good. Even charges "compatible" batteries.
This charger replaces a different model DeWalt charger that destroyed both the battery being charged and the charger when it did not shut off properly. But I like my 18-volt DeWalt drill so much that I decided to try another charger (and battery).
It seemed to work flawlessly the first few times I have used it. Both the battery and the charger remain only slightly warmer at the end of the charging process (about an hour total) and the charger shuts off as it should when charging is finished.
