If one is a Robin Williams fan ensure this film is in your collection.

A film showing both the sad and funny dramatic story within an old English college. Phrases now so linked with Robin Williams are from this film "Seize the Day" and "Oh Captain my Captain". "Seize the Day" was used at the end of "Hook" many years later. Ethan Hawke started his career with this film. The humour and drama skills of the legend is easily seen in this film. To talk to much on the film risk me being a spoiler.

I bought this film on hearing of Robin's passing. He died a year before the title song for "The world according to Garp" ("When I'm 64").

To know who or what is Dead Poets Society see it for yourself.

Conformity has to rule no matter the cost to the individual's needs.

I have always been a Robin Williams fan, and I watched this movie 10 years ago and loved it. After Robin's death I watched an interview with him where he named Dead Poets Society as one of his favourite movies that he had worked on. I wanted a copy to keep and have so far watched it 3 times.
I loved this movie as it typified how the education system worked, by way of keeping everyone equal and thinking along the same lines.
This theme is also continued with one of the boys who discovered that he loved acting but he was made to fall into line with his father's wishes to become a professional person and go to University.
The sadness of the movie is that it shows how children learn so much better when conformity is dropped. Their enthusiasm for learning about poetry, literature and their lives in general was heartening to watch. Unfortunately Robin as the teacher was doomed to failure (through no fault of his own or the pupils) as the establishment needed to continue to keep producing conforming academics who just towed the line.
Wonderful story. Sad, uplifting and very thought provoking. With all the wonderful movies that Robin Williams has done, my feeling is, that Dead Poets Society is by far his best work.
