Shada - completed at last!

A great reissue of the original 4th Doctor story, with the previously incomplete sections filled with modern animated graphics, with fresh voice recordings from the original cast. As a fan of the series since the 2nd Doctor, I was excited to discover this new version of Shada had been released. The DVD set includes two discs, which not only give you the complete Shada story, in fully restored detail, but also many extras, including commentaries and behind the scenes raw footage from the original studio shooting. By modern standards the script and filming is a little slow and clunky and the special effects appear primitive, but it was great to see Tom Baker and Lalla Ward again, as The Doctor and Romana. Other actors were well cast and the story has all the usual twists and turns and impossible situations which The Doctor always overcomes. A great nostalgic treat as well as an interesting insight into Doctor Who and TV drama from the 1970s.Read full review...

Not the best but plenty going for it!

Marred by industrial action in the late 1970s, this could've been the best Dr Who story Tom Baker starred in. Unfortunately, it was never completed back then, and a number of interesting scenes round Cambridge had to be abandoned.

In 2017, computer graphics were used to construct missing scenes from episodes left unfinished by industrial action, thereby completing the story.

By modern standards, charming, unsophisticated, and with good acting. On the downside: slow moving, absurd, and lacking the modern day special effects it could well do with.

On a personal note, I never regarded Tom Baker as the best incarnation of 'the doctor'. He struck me as too relaxed and easy going. His predecessor, Jon Pertwee, seemed much better. The character needs to be masculine (but not highly aggressive) intellectual, quick thinking, and anxious rather than relaxed (always on their guard, expecting trouble at any minute). Tom Baker was lot better than some of the actors taking the part, but didn't quite make it.

Brilliant Shada story with the best Animations.

The Shada storyline have been completed with the animations, which is brilliant. It was really sad that the Shada has been incomplete by the industrial action less than 40 Years ago. It was nice to see Tom Baker returns as 4th Doctor at the end of Shada, and also provide the voice for the animations with the other actors voice. I give it the five Stars rating.Read full review...
