Eight Below doggies

As big dog fans and a recent Dog Sled trip in Canada, working with the dogs harnesses, and feeling how hard the dogs work and bark with excitement when time to run, we really were excited to see this Eight below movie.
As a huge Orca lover, I did not care for the killer whale scene much, but understood the strive for survival in & after the storm for the dogs long winter months alone. It showed the food chain in play making it more real for the hungry dogs, who worked together to get their lunch.
We Absolutely loved the dogs; their determination, teamwork, playfulness, and camaraderie, especially when one of the dogs got hurt or lost, or someway were left behind in the storm. They all seemed to look after one another, without all the hollywood google eyes and exaggerated smirks & smiles you'll see in other movies (like Snow Dogs). These Eight Below dogs were real, smart, and just played themselves brilliantly ! Kudos to the trainers and film crew for capturing such unique footage of these gorgeous dogs. Nice job.
We would definitely recommend this movie rent/buy. Go check out Guide Jerry and his beloved sled dog sled team: Maya, Old Jack, Shorty, Max, Truman & Dewey, Shadow and Buck !

Very exciting and well-made movie!

If you're a dog lover, you're sure to love this movie! But even if you don't especially like animals, you may enjoy the storyline. "Eight Below" was superbly cast with a great script. It has a pleasant blend of humor and touching affection, as well as extreme suspense and excitement. The plot is definately gripping, and the Arctic scenery is stunning! Awesome acting and excellent photography. The dogs are all absolutely gorgeous, you'll fall in love with them at first sight!
The story is about a man who, due to an accident, must leave his dogs in the cold Arctic weather and fly out by helicopter. Most of the movie is about his efforts to return to see if the dogs survived.
This is a gripping family film.

Eight Below- 2006

Eight Below is based on a true story that involves 8 sled dogs in the Antarctic and the guide who was forced to leave them stranded there.
The movie starts out strong with the acting and the dogs are a joy to watch with their different personalities and their very different interaction with the "humans" they have to work with.
Without giving too much away about the movie and what happens, I really enjoyed the movie for the most part. However, they went alittle too far in speculating about what happened with 2 of the dogs and even though the Leopard Seal scene was interesting to watch, I didn't buy it.
The different bird hunting scenes were very interesting and believable and were tastefully done.
Towards the end of the movie, you are really hoping that help comes soon for the dogs and during the movie, it lists how many days the dogs are out on their own.
This movie is set up for all ages, but if parents are allowing very young children to view, they may have to explain about the birds, they appear very real.
All in all the movie was very good and you get a sense of urgency what the guide is feeling and the hopeless and despair that he feels trying to get back to his best friends.

Dogs steal the show.

The dogs are the best thing about this movie. They do make you fall in love with this movie even though the acting isn't anything special, however, Jason Biggs is pretty funny. As with all "inspired by real events" movies, it strays far from the real truth. It is based on the 1983 movie "Antartica", if you google it you can find out what REALLY happened. Even the timeline in the movie which they make look true is wrong. The dogs were actually left for LONGER than the movie states. Of course this is Disney and they have to make everything a little (or a lot) better than real life. That being said, this is a good movie that you will want to watch over and over.Read full review...

Eight Below

Well-rounded Dysney movie with all the elements to please most if not all viewers, especially Huskies owners (yours truly included). Although no Oscar-winning acting here, the plot line unfurls at a pleasant, even rate. The unique qualities of the Huskies breed should be noticed. Before rushing out to adopt one, viewers should be aware that Huskies are not "good" house-pets in the conventional expectations; they are fiercely independent-minded albeit docile and wonderful dogs. Regrettably, the dvd special features barely mention about the Huskies, the real stars of this movie, and squander space away on the less interesting human actors and on the ho-hum behind-the-scene tidbits.Read full review...

What an awesome FAMILY treat!!!

What a treat for the entire family! My husband and I enjoyed it just as much as the kids. Jerry Shepard is stationed in Antartica and works as a guide with his team of dogs. A geologist employs Shepard to take him on a risky expedition to find remains of a meteor supposedly from the planet Mercury. The action begins with the dogs puliing the two over dangerous ice, there is a few near death scenes (not too scary) that the dogs pull them through and then a major storm system. These great well trained dogs carry the two back safely to base. Sustaining frost bite and hypothermia the team has to leave early by plane and there is no room for the dogs. The dogs are chained up and Jerry is promised that someone would return for his beloved dogs so he agrees. It never happens because the weather is too rough and the dogs are left to fend for themselves. Months pass and although Jerry is sure his dogs are dead because they were left chained, he campains to return to the base and see for himself. This movie is a real tear jerker, the way it all plays out. It is heartwarming to see the loyalty the dogs had as well as the loyalty of their master. It really depicts survival, heart, and the will to succeed. There are so many underlying messages that are great for kids to see. Take a moment with your family and enjoy this movie. I can't tell you how it ends....you'll have to watch!Read full review...

Eight Below.

The eight sled dogs are extremely smart and exemplify the community love life together in the very cold south pole winter winter environment. The humans could learn something out of this picture.

This is an extraordinary film the family can enjoy! 5+

EIGHT BELOW is inspired by a true story, and the Director Frank Marshall does well to show the extraordinary and beautiful Antarctic ice world. Jerry (Paul Walker) a guide at a research station loves his reclusive life with his sled dogs, they are his life. A geological scientist (Bruce Greenwood)and his team show up when the ice is at its' most dangerous to traverse and he demands to be taken to his destination immediately. They embark on the journey and on the way back a blizzard begins and an accident leaves Jerry and his eight sled dogs to rescue the geological scientist amid the the most dangerous weather on earth. When they return to base they most both be rushed to receive medical care and there is no room on the plane for the sled dogs - Maya, Max, Truman, Jack, Shorty, Buck, Dewey, and Shadow. They are left behind. A raging storm like none other in recent history leaves Jerry with no way back to the research base to rescue his dogs. The weather is relentless and he is not allowed to return. This story is a tale of hope and extraordinary survival, of never giving up even when it seems all is lost. This movie shows the personalities of each of the dogs and their struggle to survive and their love for one another and of the mental and physical journey that Jerry must take in order to be able to return to Antarctica. Love, friendship, loyalty, adventure and so much more. This is a wonderful story and one the family can enjoy.Read full review...

Great movie for dog lovers !!

I really did like this movie and will probably watch it again soo!!( Shepard leaves his beloved dogs behind. Soon, however, it becomes apparent that the weather has made a return trip impossible. Can the dogs survive in the Antarctic wilderness on their own, or will Shepard get back in time to save them? The dogs emerge as the most intriguing characters in the story, each exhibiting a distinct personality and fierce loyalty.) Yes -- this was the most important part of the movie -- the digs were the stars!!!Read full review...

Excellent Movie for the Whole Family!

Disney does it again! This movie is based upon a true story. If you are a dog lover..this is a wonderful movie however....it got me teary eyed several times. No vulgar language, no sex, no really bad scary scenes. This is just a wonderful feel-good type of movie that the whole family can enjoy. You will laugh, get teary eyed, cheer....a must see, you will not be disappointed! Basically the story centers around 8 sled dogs that get left behind in Anarctica for several hundred days...they have to endure horrid cold temperatures, mother nature and other various obsticles in order to stay alive. The scientist that leaves them behind is sick that he had to do this and tries to find anyway he can to return and rescue them. When he finally returns several hundred days later...he is suprised to what he finds!Read full review...
