A deeper look at the Mingus legacy

I'm a bassist, and I've often said that if you've got your Armstrong, your Ellington and your Mingus, you've got most of the jazz you'll ever need. This book provides a great introduction to both the work and the mind of Charles Mingus for the musician, covering the compelling nuts and bolts of 55 compositions as well as some of the stories behind them. Many of the lead sheets here are not available in the usual fake-books, making this volume a valuable reference for performance, and important works available elsewhere, like the amazing and challenging "Sue's Changes," are here fleshed out with copies of original manuscripts, analysis and background material. An interesting read and great addition to any musician's library.Read full review...
