Timeless Love story

I have loved this book from the moment I had read it when it first came out. This has been a cherished book all these years and i have not owned it till now. When hubby asked me what I wanted for x-mas, this was what came to mind. I looked here first,(before any other site) and decided I did not want any other cover, but the one with the guy, holding out the flowers woulda been nice. Hubby said not to get it used, that new was best,so I did. This book never fails to hold my interest and the only thing I hated what the part about why Jervoulx was "ill." in another copy, there had been an explanitory page, explainint that he had had a stroke, and gave the warning signs, and then i re-re-read this, that page was not here.
Laura is a phenominal author with talent oozing from her like sunshine on a hot day. Her descriptiveness makes the whole book grab you from the very beginning and the contrast between Maddie and Jervoulx's world is very palpable. The only thing I did not like was there was not clear timeline: no clear date when it took place.
I cannot say enough about this book! I have loved it since I had read it from the library, a week after its relase, and cannot live without owing it. I am proud to own it and will read it at least once a year.Every time I read it, I find something new and this book leaves u with a sense of saying goodbye to a cherished friend. You watch as they grow from the simple people, to the complex relationship they have. In this, Maddie realizes that she is not meant to be a Friend, ( Quaker) and she learns what it means to stand up for her love for Jervoulx. I love the fact that she is not at all mousy and spineless.
Jervoulx is a typical man of that era: thinking with his nether regions and not his heart or head. In the middle to end part, we see him actually learning to think and see others as they really are,and then realizing that he cannpt live without the smart, simple Maddie. This fish-outta-water tale is perfect for any time, any era as love knowns no bounds. This is definitly a "keeper" for me, and I cannot say enough about this book. There is not comparison to other books: few have remained in my fave book list and fewer still, have remained the best love story ever. There is a reason for it : it is a phenominal story. If they ever make a movie, Johnny Depp would have to play Jervoulx (before him,i woulda said Heath Ledger, but now that he is gone...) and a plain, rather newcomer, should play Maddie. This story is timeless.
If she had written other books, then i urge you to read them, but this one outshines anything else I have read.

Great Book!

I've read a number of Laura Kinsale's works and always find them interesting and entertaining. She definitely knows how to make her characters and their lives interesting and current.

Excellent Read

Loved the characters. Loved the story. Easy to figure out what was going to happen, but the twists and turns kept you going. I recommend this book!!
