OUTSTANDING GPS!

My 2nd Garmin Nuvi 260w. Purchased it for another vehicle. Really like that the unit is very easy to operate. Even novices can figure out how to operate it without having a tech person on speed dial. When I purchased my 1st one I didn't realize that it would have a calculator, currency exchange APP., etc., but I welcomed them. As a senior citizen, I would definitely recommend
the 260w for anyone who needs a reliable and easy to use GPS.

Good unit, but old maps.

Battery lasted pretty long, about ten minutes.
Unit acquired satellites in five minutes.
Maps cost $50 to update. Next time,
I will buy a new unit!

Good value for the money if you want a basic GPS unit and a wide screen

Allready had one. Very easy to use. You get free software updates from Garmin, but map updates do cost $89 for lifetime. Some of the business under points of interest are nolonger in business. I know of two resturants that show local to me that are out of business. That's where I hope the map updates would fix it. The wide screen makes it easy to see. Battery life not so good. About 4 hours. But with a cig outlet and adapter, your good to go. It could be better with a MP3 player and Point of Intereset software and bluetooth technology. OwellRead full review...

Great GPS! Reasonable size, mapping, extras. . .

This unit works every time (I now own 3 of this same model). I've paid for the lifetime map upgrades with Garmin.com ($120.00), but otherwise great unit. I use it for work, I drive to people houses all day long, it's very good. I think I may be forgetting how to read maps!
There are several free downloads from Garmin.com, including avatars, languages and additional points of interest, and you can upgrade/add additional maps for other countries if you go on vacation. It reads the street names fairly accurately.
Wish list; I would like to know what _____(restaurants, gas, etc) are coming up ahead. Currently, if you select what _____ is closest, it gives you a radius, if the closest 10 or 20 ______ are behind you, it's not so helpful. Still, I love having this, I take it everywhere.

Works great

This GPS works great, the screen is a nice size with good resolution, the controls are intuitive and easy to use. The interface is easy to navigate, it could have used a few more on board features like compass/baring, time, ambient temperature etc.

but over all i like the product and it performs reliably.

Garmin nuvi 260W Automotive GPS Receiver

This unit is very good, only have one problem with it is that the places loaded in the system are not up to date. And on top of that you have to purchase a lifetime maps update, yet I still have to get, for about $90 or a one time map update for $50. The maps that I have are so out of date. There are places that it searches and finds and they haven't been there for years. And the newer shops and stores aren't searchable. I'm afriad to purchase the maps update because I'm not too sure if they updated fully on the new roads and stores. I've been hearing people complaining that it's not worth the money because it's basically the same and that the maps are not updated yet. But I'm going to wait after christmas to purchase it.Read full review...

Best GPS there is!

I bought one of these for myself about 6 months ago, and then got one for my boyfriend for Christmas because I loved it so much. The Garmin GPS's are easy to use, I love the wide screen. (My brother has a regular sized one and it's just too small) You can see so much more with it... really makes a difference. Also, the 260 has the fantastic added feature of saying the actual street names. Anything below a 255 does NOT, which is painfully annoying, especially if you are driving somewhere that's crowded, with a lot of streets close together. Its not helpful at all to have something telling you to turn in 200 feet when there are like 5 streets all together. In any case, this one is definitely a great buy.Read full review...

Excellent!

As a new driver, I want to pay attention to the road and at the same time not get lost and have to worry about where I am headed. After careful and extensive research I decided to purchase this item because I felt that it would be the best choice for me. It calls out directions so that I never have to take my eyes off the road. There are a lot of other customizations, I can add favorite places and search nearby restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations and more.

The only downside is that when searching for a particular address of a friend's house, it may not have it if it is new place. In these cases, I just set it to go to a nearby location and follow from there and then save it as a favorite after I tell the GPS to let me know where I'm at.

Another minor annoyance is that the GPS tells me directions that aren't clear (it tells me to turn but no turning point is ahead) but it updates as soon as the location is about to approach so that isn't too much of a problem unless I am in heavy traffic. That is the only annoying thing I find about the device.

I love how if I make a wrong turn, which is usually impossible to do because it reminds you twice, it automatically recalculates your route. Before, I used to use the navagatior feature on my cell phone, but this is way better. The battery seems to run out quickly, but maybe because I purchased mine used it doesn't run as long.

Okay GPS, but I've Seen Better

I like this GPS unit but there are definitely better ones on the market. It's quite easy to use, compact, and easy to read. I haven't had any major problems with it. It also reads the directions to you coherently making it possible to follow it without having to glance at the screen.
The cons of the unit: this GPS is not as fast as others I've seen, so if you make a wrong turn or make a detour it takes a little while for the unit to catch up. Also the suction cup no longer works and seems to have been poorly designed; I'm now using packing tape to make it stick to the dashboard. I bought this unit to replace a TOMTOM ONE XL that I broke (broken screen and TOMTOM will not repair their products). Overall I would recommend TOMTOM for performance over the Nuvi and I would definitely check out later models of GPS units.
Overall okay for the price.

Solid features, mediocre reception

The functionality is great but the satellite reception is generally hanging by a hair in the Ohio valley. There has always been a huge issue with radio wave based reception of any kind here so that is a bit of a defense for the unit.

However, with today's technology they merely needed to up the multiplier circuit to eliminate such an issue. These manufacturers always seem to minimize things here and there even on their better units.

Overall though, I am satisfied. It's a very good unit in terms of function, screen quality etc. I am a bit irked by the British speaking voice though considering that I am AMERICAN. I do not want your car insurance, I do not want your outback steak, I do not want you representing my country when you do not even live here.

Cant beat the price if youre looking for a good gps device.

7/15/13
The Garmin Nuvi 260w is a great gps that is very easy to use and get a hang of. Its got abilities to save and set your "Home" location so that you'll never lose your way home. You can save "Favorite" locations for easy look up. Even though the displays touch sensitive lcd isnt very vibrant or crisp or as quickly reacting as todays gps's you cant beat the price.Read full review...
