Can't beat it for the price.

We bought this for a trip to New Zealand. Overall, it preformed very well. Many of the smaller towns are not listed in it's program, but with some fooling around with a map and entering different names, we could always find our way to where we wanted to go. Also, many of the attractions, like certain waterfalls or beaches are not in it's memory, so a good guide books helps you to narrow down what you need to enter for directions. The driving instructions were very accurate for the most part. With it's pronunciation of the Maori place names it was very helpful to have a navigator running the GPS as you couldn't always understand a place name and had to look at the spelling. I have used better and worse GPS's, but for the money this is handy for travel to New Zealand. It would have been tough driving without it.Read full review...

slow and Disappointing

Purchased this unit for travelling in Italy, in the instructions it said to dis-able the North America maps which I did, but every time you make a wrong turn, in Italy, it has to reload maps as it can not hold enough in it memory. At times I felt like throwing the unit out the window as it was so frustrating waiting up to 2 min for the unit to reload. the unit does work quite well in Canada though but that was not why I purchased it. disappointingRead full review...

Excellent GPS cheaper than you can get anywhere

Absolutely love the features on this product. Bluetooth for the cell phone gives me handsfree operation and a speaker phone without taking phone from my waist. Clear directions with turn by turn with street names. Accurate detours and every point of interest you can imagine. Touch screen works great and easy to type in addresses. Wider screen gives better viewing capabilities which makes it safer than smaller versions

Simple to learn and traffic feature works great if you are around the cities it works in. They could expand that further, but saved me 45 minutes in D.C. last week.

Price was unbeatable brand new in the box never been open can sell for $300 or more with Live traffic for life. Got mine still in the plastic wrap for less than $250 with free shipping. Another great Ebay find

High quality product but what else would you expect from Garmin the leader in GPS.

Garmin nuvi 265WT Car GPS Receiver

GPS was refurbished. Normally i would stay away from anything but new but this is still backed by the 1 year warranty so I feel good about owning it. The unit has all of the features I wantd including bluetooth. The menu and navagating through them takes a little time and the keyboard is hard to work at times. I like the wide screen and map of the road. The simulator is also fine. I am a little suspicious of the cradle and how it will hold up so i bought three more as backup.
The directions to a selected address are going to vary considerably if you have used the avoidance feature under navigation. If you select avoid highways and toll roads and try to go too far, the route taken may not be what you want. You have to check your route preferences and avoidance options before any trip to make sure you have the settings which make sence.

Downloading stuff (maps and vehicles)from the garmin web site is easy enough. I purchased an A/C Wall charger but you don't really need one since the unit is charging every time you are driving with the FM receiver/Car adapter connected to the 12 volt supply in the vehicle.

I would recommend this unit to anyone with any experience level with GPS.

Garmin Nuvi 265 - All the best features

After a lot of research on which GPS unit to buy - I decided on the Garmin 265WT. I have been very happy with it. The reasons I decided to buy this unit? Garmin lets you update maps for free if there is a new map since your purchase; this unit - while more expensive than some of the base models - has free lifetime traffic. This is a great feature and has helped me find alternate routes around rush hour traffic and accidents; And lastly I wanted the bluetooth feature on this model. I was skeptical that it would be of any quality, but it works surprisingly well. Calls are easy to answer on the unit and also easy to ignore if I want. Callers sometimes don't even know I'm talking on a speaker phone.
One downside of most of the GPS devices including this one is that the mount for the unit really is not very secure and when applied to the windshield it leaves ugly marks. I paid extra for the Portable Friction Mount for the Garmin Nuvi and am very happy with it. It sits very securely on the dash board now and I can move it easily between cars. I wish it came with the unit though!
Still all in all I love it and my family all shares it and loves it too. I would definitely reccommend this model.

Nuvi 265WT

I also own the Garmin Nuvi 260 which I have used for about 2 years in my mostly travel based job. The 260 and 265WT units are both great GPSs units. I have had repeated success in many different states in the US with the 260 getting me to my destinations and I’m sure the 265WT does just as well. These units both have great features and they are really nice; a few odd directions like having you make u-turns, etc. but as long as you keep your eyes open, you should be able to make it work for you.
POSITIVES:
-Quick Route Calculation
-Bright Screen (minimal glare)
-Great GPS unit with great graphics
-Fits easily in pocket when leaving car.
-Built in security feature- password to unlock OR proximity unlock from a place of your choosing
-Turns announced in advanced of the turn
NEGATIVES:
-Traffic feature is non-existent / useless (based on 2 months of driving), see detail below
-Map display is only accurate to within 40-80 feet
-Speaker distorts if too loud (i.e. over 80% volume setting) (*NOTE- If driving with windows down you have to have to have volume at 90-100% or you may not hear the audio.

Traffic detail;
The traffic feature on the 265WT is worthless. I bought the unit new in May 2009 and I drive about 165 round trip miles a day between northern Baltimore and southern Washington DC. My daily trip has at least 3 major routes that I can use, and my thoughts were that the traffic feature in the 265WT would automatically make the route selections based on the variable traffic for the area. I generally check other traffic services on my (large display) cell phone like Google Maps and Traffic Navigation sites while traveling, and the 265WT has not yet been able to re-route me even when the delays are significant and alternate routes are obvious. In fact the 265WT would often select the worst route when traffic was a factor.

Garmin Nuvi 265WT GPS System

I bought this Garmin after my Magellan started acting like I threw it in the water, and was immediately impressed with it's functionality and ease of use!
I particularly like the Lifetime Traffic feature, but unfortunately there is only a few areas on the west coast that have service, and only Portland area in Oregon. I guess that may be the only place I need it.

This GPS comes loaded with several different voices, and even different languages. I really like the TTS(text to speech) feature that actually says the name of the streets instead of just telling you to turn.

Also the Bluetooth feature comes in handy in states that it is illegal to talk on your cell phone and drive at the same time. A call comes in on your bluetooth phone, you touch a button on your Nuvi, and boom! you're talking hands free. Good volume and clarity.

For your money, this is a great mid level GPS, and I would definitely recommend this one to a friend. Even an enemy. Great GPS.

First GPS

First time using a GPS so nothing to compare to.
Generally speaking i like this product. It has a clear visible screen and voice prompts for upcoming turns. Has some fun interesting features like tracking distances, mileage, speed, etc.
So far it has got me to where i've wanted to go very well.
It came in handy on a recent night trip in the mountains on a lot of curvy roads. Glancing at map i could see what curves were coming up ahead and was able to anticipate and adjust driving speeds.
Some of the accuracies in re mileage and locating places are faulty and questionable. Doing some experimenting I searched for the nearest Radio Shack (about a mile away) and it came up with places far and away. Also put in a city that i know is over 300 mi. away and it came up with 200 mi.

Nevertheless i would say that this GPS does the job and has been a good experience for me as a newbie.
I'm kind of curious as to what more expensive sophisticated systems can do.

Works...Period

This is a pretty good GPS for the money. It came with a case to carry it in and has about a 4 hour battery life. It sticks on the window just fine. I brags about having traffic, but during my 650 mile trip, it only popped up once telling me all was ok. I was in the middle of nowhere with no one around. Very disappointed with the free traffic alerts. Also, if you are rerouted as I was, it will constantly tell you to turn around. It will tell you take x street and then turn on y street where you end up back where you started. We didn't get rerouted to make it the route we had to, but it kept telling us how to get back on the street we were traveling before. We couldn't get it to tell us the "new" way. Overall though, this unit works well. Many extra features made it fun as well...like changing the icon used to show where you are on the road. You can easily find gas stations and food places as it will look around the area you are travel ling in and tell you how to get there if desired. Also, you can move out of the 3d mode of traveling and look via a "eagle's" view and see other roads that may come up to help you out it necessary.Read full review...

Return to the Highlighted Route :-( Maps for 08?

Like:Unit is very sturdy, USB power, USB to Computer, Memory Card slot...
Free Traffic for Life... Large Cities...

Love: the Details and POI, Bought for road trip to Alaska...
Was able to download POI from Google Maps direct to the UNIT...
Talk about easy to plan road trips...

Dislike: Short battery life, only an hour or so... Keep it plugged in...
Maps were old, about 2 years or more out... needed newest maps...

Over all a nice unit, have used it for the past four days...
Got me to a park in Louisivlle KY just fine, Took a trip into the country off KY 150, road was rerouted about 3 years ago, 20 miles in length, totally missing from map, 2009 version... sad...

Unit works great, has multiple option for custom config... Screen is large enough to see road names clearly, calculates routes quickly and recalculates just as quickly if you decide to change course for some reason...

Like the Photo map option off Google as well... Good buy around 160-180

This item was/is rated by Consumers Report as best buy for the money and options. This GPS is bigger than the old ones, and has all the new updates, also has lifetime traffic up date. Also you can put pictures on this unit to show to your friends and family. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR.......Read full review...
