The gang’s all here as Genesis hit their stride

Early Genesis isn’t to everyone’s taste, but for those who love it, this is a milestone album. The first to feature Phil Collins on drums, backing vocals, and, on one song, lead vocals, it’s a glimpse onto the future. Steve Hackett also makes his debut, to complete the classic line-up. Drama, classical references and quirky humour are all key elements here. For some, this might be their gateway into the glories of this Gabriel-era, for others it might prove a bit too gamey. To each their own. Read full review...

A mixed Bag

Nursery Cryme was the first album Genesis released after Phil Collins took over the drums and Steve Hackett added his guitar to their sound. As such it takes a big step towards establishing the Genesis sound. However, it is very much a mixed bag.

The plus points are the sublime "Musical Box" and awesome "Return of the Giant Hogweed" These are 9 minute epics that became regular features in the band's live show. Much of the rest of the album is whimsey although "Fountain of Salmacis" only just misses the greatness of the first two. Of the rest "Harlequin" is short and sweet while "Harold the Barrel" displays Gabriel's love of a good story.

If you can live without "Fountain of Salmacis" and the other lesser tracks - then go for the Genesis Live album. If has amazing versions of "The Musical Box" and "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" along with the best tracks on their next studio album "Trespass".

A final word - this is progressive rock - a much maligned genre that has become a byword for pompous, overblown excess. I love it - but it won't be to everyone's taste!
