Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend!

Am SO happy to own this classic, and so happy it is available! A recent ad by Clint Eastwood & Martin Scorcese advises that old films are deteriorating & desperately need restoration and transfer onto blu-ray to preserve such classics; they said 50% of all films prior to 1950 are lost?! wow. And Marilyn Monroe will never be duplicated. This was a quintessential role, demonstrating not only her wonderful sexiness, but her gift for comedy as well. She was a smart woman, but her Hollywood persona presented a camouflage to the educated side of her. The breathy speech and dumb blonde is what we got--but that body! whew. A friend once had us watch her walk in slow-mo from behind in her film "Niagara"--he says "hey, check this out" as he played the walk in slow motion, and I will never forget that now when I think of Marilyn. It was amazing. And likewise I always think of her doing this musical number in that hot pink dress & gloves! Fabulous. That's why I want to own this film. It's a classic--and with Monroe and the recently deceased Jane Russell (who only made a few films). Next I want to get "How to Marry a Millionaire"--another great film of Marilyn's. Also, this was a good story! A fun film. Chick flick? Maybe. Men seem to have moved forward into Angelina Jolie or whomever. But, sorry, Jolie ain't no Marilyn Monroe. '-)Read full review...

Monroe and Russell Sing Their Hearts Out!

What's not to like in this 1953 movie featuring Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee and Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw, two beautiful showgirls on tour looking for marriage. Their definition of love is different: Lorelei wants a man with money, Dorothy wants a man who will truly love her and have fun with her. There's not a lot of plot here, but we are still glued to the screen as these two showgirls bump, grind, and wiggle their show!

The plot revolves around Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan), a rich junior executive, being in love with Lorelei, but his father disapproves. So Daddy Esmond sends a private detective, Ernie Malone (Elliott Reid), to catch Lorelei in a scandal so that he can discredit her. It doesn't take long because Lorelei has convinced Sir Francis "Piggy" Beekman (Charles Coburn) to give her a diamond tiara--a gift that his wife doesn't know about--and then he leaves for a safari to Africa.

Never mind the plot, we are mesmerized with the songs and perfmances of "Two Little Girls from Little Rock," "With My Baby Bye and Bye," "Anyone Here for Love," "When Love Goes Wrong," and especially Monroe's performance of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and then reprised by Russell.

This movie was a big hit in 1953 and was so popular that a sequel was made, "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes," with Russell returning as the original Dorothy Shaw's daughter and with Jeanne Crain as her sister.

This movie catapulted Marilyn Monroe to the stardom that we remember today. But you can't help thinking about her relationship to the Kennedys as she sings about wanting a millionaire boyfriend.

Gentlemen prefer blondes Marilyn Monroe

This movie’s story is quite silly, cause it’s supposed to be!
Marilyn Monroe should of won an Oscar or two for the best comedian of all times with her wicked sex appeal adding an air of innocence. Only her could play that kind of role so perfectly. Just brillant. Love ALL her movies!
She’s a pleasure to watch, she’s so beautiful.
Too bad she left us too soon, sure she would of gone on making other blockbusters!

One of the best from Marilyn Monroe!

After renting Gentlemen Prefer Blondes numerous times because it was a movie I could watch over and over, I decided I needed to add it to my movie collection. In my opinion, this is one of Monroe's best. The songs are all catchy and fun. The supporting actors are superb as well. The costumes are gorgeous. Every scene is enjoyable and of course the famous Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend performance cannot be outdone. This has something for everyone. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a must see!Read full review...
