Hot Water and No Leaks!

I knew the diverter wasn't working properly because the radiators were warming up when running hot water for a bath, and the water wasn't as hot as it used to be.

Inside the boiler, access to the front of the valve is good, but the back connections are a swine to get a spanner on. You need large (32mm & 38mm) open enders with narrow heads and short handles, plus a couple of smaller adjustables. Be prepared to grind down any normal size spanners to fit! The microswitch assemby is held on by a circlip which is difficult to see and tight to remove - disconnect its wires and spin it round to point towards the heat exchanger to expose the circlip.

This is also a good opportunity to clean out the heat exchanger, which comes out attached to the diverter. I gave mine a couple of hours in an ultrasonic tank.

The diverter comes apart quite easily, but watch out for a couple of springs which can cause it to 'ping' apart all of a sudden. Mine was crudded up with hard sooty deposits which were inhibiting the smooth sliding of the central pin that operates the port discs. The repair kit includes five tiny o-rings which fit inside these discs and also the diaphragm housing, but I was mainly interested in the new diaphragm as I suspect they may deteriorate over time. The new one in the kit was identical to the original and looked well made. The kit doesn't include new rubber rings for the outer rim of the port discs, so be careful not to damage them when cleaning the parts.

The kit also includes new fibre washers for the various unions, but mine originally had rubber washers which I reused. Reconnecting some of these unions is a real struggle, and you may need to loosen peripheral connections to get everything lined up. The whole job took me about nine hours, but the struggle was worth it as it now works perfectly with no leaks.
