More Damon Days

I bought this out of mild curiosity & tbh I wasn't expecting much - Demon Days is by far my least favourite Gorillaz album out of the 3 and this was a collection of stuff that didn't make the cut.

But it is excellent- a total music mishmash of musical styles that seems to flow together brilliantly- far better than you'd expect from a b-sides collection.

Of the two songs I was previously familiar with, 'Hong Kong' is much improved from the help! War child album version, and the original demo of 'Don't get Lost in Heaven' is a lot better too- more natural and organic sounding than the one on the album. 'People' is based around the same groove as 'Dare' and is a much more likeable song in my opinion.

The rest of the tracks show Damon Albarn's startling talent for creating diverse and beautiful pieces of music. The songs are good, don't get me wrong, close your eyes at certain points and it could be Blur, but always with Gorillaz there is the sense that he came up with an idea in the morning, got it down on tape and then left it at at that. All of them could be re-worked into huge, absolutely killer tracks but Damon likes to present his songs as half-finished ideas, sketches. No wonder he likes the idea of working as a cartoon band...

That said, keeping the sounds raw and fresh does work incredibly well for him and D-sides sounds as good as anything Gorillaz have ever produced, a few more listens and I'm pretty sure it'll be my favourite album of theirs.

...and THEN I'll get round to listening to CD2. I'm no fan of remixes but it's bound to be worth a listen : )

Must buy for Gorillaz fans

I had a gamble with this CD and it turned out to be amazing! The remix CD is really good. There are some brilliant hidden tracks and remixes! Buy it!!

If you're not a fan of the band then you won't find anything here that will convert you to the cause but I think Stop the Dams has a more universal appeal which might well be worth a digital one-song purchase.Read full review...
