grreat game

i loved this game every since it came out. good story. great characters. good music. all around good game. plus it has cheat codes.

by Top critical review

Definately the Beggining of the GTA franchise.

The characters through out Vice City are all clones. GPS function in the game is a thumbs down due to it being blurry even if you have the most HD tv & you cannot add a destination point, it's just a map. Missions are very vague, overall graphics are not pleasing to the eye. Read full review...

This game has caused me tears of laughter

I've had the game for quite some time now but i've never finished it. thats becuase i enjoy causing terror around the city and being chased by cops.

Tommy is your main character and this guy breaks no sweat causing terror or running illegal errands. hes VERY entertaining and humours and says alot of random stuff that will make you bend over and laugh. like for example if you make him drive you and bump into someone else, he'll say something like
"how did you get your lincese?"

however if you cause disruption to some drivers, they'll either speed off, get out and run, or fight back. sometimes they have friends that will come and fight you off.

he does have a radio station with varioes music fms to listen to. and their news station is Hilarious. I know one of their shows lasts for about an hour, i think there are two news stations

There are TONS of cheat codes for this game, such as changing his apparences to various characters, course he'll have the same voice, you can make him change clothes. there are codes for making cars go faster, have bigger wheels, make cars and boats fly or bounce. you can have the pedestrians carry weapons or get in fights with people (just make sure youre out of their way)

you can change the weather if you want to such as forcast, raining, foggy, very sunny or dark

you can have unlimited health and armor.

you can find hidden items like those treasure bags but you can also attack people and get tones of money. there is humor also on the streets. sometimes you'll hear pedestrians say the funniest things. you'll even see a guy running from the police officer.

the city is BIG and loaded with life, but you can only go to a handful of places.

you can rent and buy places and have your favorites cars stored in a garage if you wanted to.

But like i said, i havent finished the game but its fun to just ride around and act crazy. the game is very enjoyable. i cry laughing sometimes.

Good game, but I still prefer GTA3

Even though Vice City has been fun, and being an 80s girl I love the soundtrack, I still think it falls short of the GTA III experience. The graphics seem slightly faded, although that may be on purpose to convey age since it is set in the 80s. I prefer the crisp graphics on GTAIII. Even though Vice has more weapons, some of them are not as good. The rocket launcher (a must for shooting down helicopters) and the sniper rifle are not as good. The landscape is lined up haphazardly too. After having this game for several years, I still can't find my way around as well as I should. I never had a problem like that with GTAIII. All in all, a good game but it is no GTAIII. I have San Andres, but haven't played it yet. Hopefully it will be better than both.Read full review...

A great game, action packed and lots of fun for just $4!!!

I bought this game to add to my collection of over 50 ps2 games I play on Tuesdays when i go to my grammas house w/ my 4 year old cousin... Definitely not a game for him, but entertaining and action packed enough for a 13 year old like myself. I love the storyline, it is very solid, and there are tons of things to do in this game, story, free roam, etc. Very vulgar though, killing cops and civilians, drugs, theft, hookers, cursing, etc. But thats why its rated "M" right? One of the est gta's compared to others, really started the revolution of this game series.Read full review...

80stastic

Vice City came out in 2002, (yes 2002) I got it for my Christmas that year and having had a long hiatus from gaming, this was my reintroduction. With open world game playing and FLYING - seeing a location on the horizon and being able to travel there was a new thing and it was exciting. The game took me months to finish as there is so much to do and not all of it easy(Fire truck!!) But the real joy of this game lies in the aesthetic and attention to detail which for me has been missing from ALL other GTA releases (Even vice city stories) its pure exploitation of the great 80s - the clothes, the tv shows , the films the music, you name it, its all there along with an all star cast like Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Tom Sizemore, Lee Majors and many more -The hilarious radio stations and a typical rags to riches storyline with missions, (which is common place now) which you can do in a non linear fashion if you wish, if you want to just do the main story - if i remember correctly it only makes for around 40% of the games completion - there is just so much outside the story. if you grew up in the early to mid eighties and want to recapture a little of it. Look no further - its nearly 20 years old now and I STILL return to it every now and then. Easily one of my top 5 video games of all time.Read full review...

Takes me back, an instant classic!

I remember playing this game when I was a teen and how much fun the story and the music was. Plus hearing Ray Liotta's voice was a super cool added touch. Playing it now as an adult all these years later and the feeling is still the same. Great game for GTA as well as old school game fans in general. Read full review...

Very addictive

I've played this game yrs ago and completed it I owned all vice city. I'm about half way thru but I have to rest it some bc I get too addicted and play for hrs. Good game but the city needs to be way bigger with more challenges and better graphics. I have play GTA on Xbox and the graphics and challenges were very 3D and challenging I didn't complete it but I like to get all the GTA games in time. ThanksRead full review...

I can honestly say one of the greatest games ever made

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a true classic. I bought it almost 3 years ago and was hooked after first playing it. The game is made to resemble both Miami Beach and Downtown Miami. The game is violent, sure, blood splatters on the TV screen, heads popping off, but it doesn't make me want to kill somebody. The city is expansive and it's hard to run out of things to do in the game. You can go inside a few places such as weapons stores, dance club, or the mall to get something to eat to replenish your health. Personally, I think the best part of the game is the music. The songs from the game are from people you may know unlike other games that aquire "rising" artists. The songs are music that you would hear on a regular FM radio and are formatted into different "radio stations" very nicely. I loved the music so much that I bought the soundtrack as well (I wrote a review for that). Not to be bias, I'll say there are still a few things wrong with the game. First of all, compared to the later GTA: San Andreas, you can't climb walls or swim. The police chases are not very exciting as you constantly lose the police even in a slow car and they crash into walls when you turn corners. However, if you are contemplating on whether to buy this game or not, DO IT! It, along with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, has been the best game I have ever played.Read full review...

Excellent!

The game play is fun. The story is compelling. It provides and good challenge , weather taking on goons in the missions or running from the cops while just on a random rampage. Has provided me with hours of entertainment. Just like when I play the game as a teenager.Read full review...

Vice City - GTA - Addictive & Quite Wonderful

This was the first GTA game I played and it was a stunning introduction to the series - good enough to cause me to buy its forerunner GTA III and every new GTA game since. Though technology and coding slickness have moved on since Vice City hit the stores, it is still - for my money - the best in the series in terms of cohesive game play, narrative story line and soundtrack. San Andreas provided a much bigger playing area, many more vehicles and aircraft, but its radio stations were, in my opinion, boring - plus the designers chose to lose a fair amount of detail in the vehicles so that they could cope with the expanded dimensions and extra movements of the SA 'world'.

Vice City's radio stations are in a different league - they offer hit after hit from the 1980's (the period in which the game is set), a wide variety of different choices and even talk stations which are so funny that you can hear the same jokes and warped interviews with the city's local and visiting celebrities over and over again and still enjoy them. I hate Rap and Country & Western, so San Andreas' stations are usually switched off when I play that game. From my point of view, Vice City set a standard for in-vehicle listening that has yet to be surpassed.

There is a lot of water in Vice City - the ocean, inlets, ponds, swimming pools and your character cannot swim - that was one of the main criticisms levelled by hard core VC players. It can be highly annoying when you drive off a bridge or fall off one of the boats, watercraft or aircraft with floats and swiftly drown, but I felt more than compensated by fairly quick access to the helicopters and floatplanes which are dotted throughout the game. When you take to the air, the full complexity and detail of the city becomes even more evident. You can land on roofs, on water (if you have floats on the aircraft) or anywhere there is enough room to put down safely. I found that helicopters were a great form of transport for a lot of missions - think about it...no traffic jams, no jostling police cars and very direct routes to and from the objective points.

The missions are well planned; some are very difficult, but none are impossible or based upon bizarre solutions...you can even use alternative ways to complete these tasks (a factor which enables you to replay the game and experiment with new tactics). When you start off in Vice City, you are confined to one island - but it is a big place with a huge amount of things to see and do. You can roam, explore and choose your own ways of doing things - will you be honest and law-abiding or will you steal cars and/or beat up, shoot or stab pedestrians and take their money?

There is a wide variety of firearms in Vice City - assault rifles, sniper rifles, fully automatic machine pistols, handguns - which you can pick up, steal or buy (along with body armour) in many locations. Stabbing and clubbing weapons are available too - knives, a katana (yes, a samurai sword), baseball bats, police nightsticks, hammers...even a chain saw. Eventually, you learn which weapons are best in different situations - for example, the cops are far more likely to intervene if you cause shock and horror on the streets with the sword - but using a baseball bat to brain somebody is often not going to make citizens dial 911.

If you haven't played Vice City - get a copy now. GTA IV is more modern, more complex, but VC has a unique character and it is a LOT of fun!
