Inexpensive Alternative or a Fun Toy

I have owned the Jornada 72X series before. In High school, it was perfect for writing papers and doing minor research in HTML pages; such as wiki and news articles. The small keyboard was perfect for someone like me, with oddly skinny fingers. One can also add from a small range of compatible wireless cards to give the Jornada network capabilities.

If one really thinks on the subject, these machines here were the predecessors to today's Netbook fad. With minor changes, hardware upgrades, and a different marketing strategy, the modern Netbook was born.

I find myself in a predicament where I need this companion by my side yet again. With my new job, I always need access to my spreadsheet at any time of the day. A normal Pocket PC has proven insufficient when competing with the Jornada 72X's fully capable keyboard. My Netbook can't compete either; The Jornada can fit in my pocket.

These machines are not all about business. There are plenty of sources on the Internet for simple, yet entertainiing games, social software like I.M., and media. I, myself, had a third party video player on my last one, allowing me to watch my favorite animes during down time.

Whether you need to do just business basics, write papers, check news articles, mild entertainment, keep in touch, or just to tinker with another electronic; The Jornada 728 is a much less expensive alternative to today's bulkier Netbooks. If all you need is bare minimum processing, then the Jornada will get the job done.

Fancy handheld computer for the busy person.

I like the compact size, I love the rechargeable battery. It has windows and can be connected to your desktop computer or even a printer. You have access to the internet and it even has a PDA system. It came with an ac adapter and also a car adapter and a docking station which I love. The draw back is that there are newer models out there, so when I went to order a case for it, it has been discontinued. I decided to buy it because I could get connected to the internet with it when I was away from home. The other thing that I was not happy with was the fact that it did not come with a user guide. Overall I am very happy with my HP Jornada 728 and I would reccomend it to others.

Thank you!

Jornada 728 is a great little computer

The HP Jornada 728 is a wonderful little computer. I use it heavily for business and for personal work. The 728 is the last in a long and trusted line of handheld computers from HP.

Most people have never seen a handheld computer. When I'm using it, and people see it, they stop to ask about it. They’re surprised at its small size, large screen, keyboard, and what it can do. Many think it's 'cute' and wonder what games it has. Since I never play games, I can't answer that question; it's always used for serious work. However, I’ve heard that games are available for it.

Though it's not a 'full blown' computer, it runs the applications that I need. There are many add on applications out there which will run on this little wonder, allowing me to do all sorts of tasks that I would normally need a laptop for.

The unit also syncs information with my laptop and desktop computers. Any changes made on my laptop, desktop, or Jornada, are all automatically updated when the unit is docked. All my Outlook contacts are easily carried with me wherever I go. Word and Excel documents also go where I go. When I'm in a meeting, I can pull up information on my Jornada that others can only access from their desk.

My favorite feature is the keyboard. Because I do so much data entry while on the road, a built in keyboard is a must. The keys are just large enough to type on normally. Even with the nice keyboard, when the unit is closed, it fits easily into my back pocket or jacket pocket.

The long battery life, over 10 hours, is a huge plus. I can easily leave home, sit in the airport and use the unit, take a long flight, all the while working on my Jornada, and arrive at my destination with more than enough battery power left.

Personally, I believe the two major downfalls of the Jornada line were the fact that most of the public never saw one and their price. Though the line of Jornada HPC’s have been out for many years, it still amazes me how many people have never seen one or heard of one. I’m constantly asked, “Where can I get one?”

The Jornada 728 is not a substitute for a laptop, but it sure comes close in my realm. I think of my Jornada 728 as a small extension of my laptop computer. When I don’t need the power of my laptop, the Jornada is perfect.

Extremely desired but 'very' disappointed.

I'm a Professional Engineer. I bought it for the PDA values...Calendar, appointments, etc. It is also preferable to the pocketable PDAs for use with spreadsheets which Engineers use alot. The biggest disappoints were (1)the difficulties with ActiveSync connecting the 728 to my desktop. Once connected though, they stay connected until I break the connection; (2) the connection to the internet via a WiFi Card. I get an hour glass until I 'touch' the screen and I DON'T get all of the info available on a site by site basis. For instance, I don't get all of "My Ebay." None of my watch list shows up. Of course these problems are compounded by the fact that Linksys techs aren't familiar with the Jornada 700 series and HP has COMPLETELY abandoned them...no support at all...and the HP techs I talked to weren't knowledgable of them either. Pretty poor considering the unit is barely 5 to 6 years old.Read full review...

Good machine if you do a lot of typing. Slow for surf.

I use my ipaq 3715 for watching movies and surf the net and ocassionaly work on excell spreadsheets. I bought the 728 for its bigger screen and the keyboard. I noticed that the screen is far from the quality you get in a pocket pc. You still get a nice resolution and colors but the refresh is kind of slow and this is a 64 MB model. However is much better than a ppc for viewing web pages and office documents because the bigger screen size.
If you want portability go for a ppc because this is a small machine but still not very pocketable!!.
I think it is very good for a student or a traveling salesman because you can have all the m$ office functions in a very small and confortable device than also allows you to listen to mp3 files. You can watch some videos but you need to degrade them so they are playable so dont think in this machine as a video player.

HP Jornada 728

I am well satisfied with both the product and the price at which I was able to obtain this one. It works well with Windows XP desktop provided it is set to Windows 98 compatibility. While it came loaded with MOST of the programs that I will need, I am disappointed that many other programs are no longer available for the Windows 2000 CE. I have added a 1 gig flash card and am no where near filling it up. Word of warning... I bought this one NIB. You can buy used ones cheaper, but, "Buyer, Beware!" The used one could wind up being money thrown down a hole. Make sure you are getting the special software that is required for the Jornada 728 to communicate with your Windows desktop PC.Read full review...

I love Jornadas!

I bought the Jornada 728 to replace my aging Jornada 680.
Uses:Travel or coffeeshop Internet, writing, emulators, whatever applications I can put in there.

I really like Jornadas. I find the keyboard perfect for my chicken peck. I know some people complain the keyboard is too small, but I guess it depends on the user's hand size and typing style.

The web browser is pretty good for something that old. It display most pages without issues. Websites that format other sites for phone 'browsage', like skweezer.net, might come in handy for certain feature-heavy pages.

Overall, I think the Jornada 728 is a viable alternative to the new breed of ultraportable laptops, especially since the form factor is yet unmatched.

Assuming, of course, that the intended usage matches the capabilities of the device. Be advised that you won't get Windows XP, or any kind of Windows other than the preinstalled Windows CE 3.0 (HPC 20000) on it. That operating system is not directly compatible with x86 (PC) operating systems. Which means that same applications won't run on PCS and HPCs. However, there is a pretty wide selection of programs developed for the HPC2000.

Also, there are versions of Linux being developed for HPCs, however, getting them setup exceeds the capabilities of a casual computer user.

Using a Compact Flash card greatly enhances the storage, almost matching that of the low-end EEE Pc laptops.

Since the price of a refurbished 728 or 720 is about a third of that of a new low-cost ultraportable laptop, it is worth checking it out!

Jornada Power

I am a Current User of a HP Jornada. Its 3 Years Old. Bought it Brand New.
And After Dropping it a couple of time because I carry it everywhere like people carry their Cellphones. I Still Works. They are Durable, Reliable, and a hell lot better than an Iphone. You have a Laptop Computer in your Hands, full Keyboard, A Touch Screen, Tons of Apps and appa you can write yourself. I have a Software Developer kit. Its a part of me I want a Backup. So an extra will be there if mine dies and then mine will be its spare parts if the New one needs parts. HP makes durable equiptment and its was a mistake for industry to switch to HPC (Hand Held PC) to Blackberry or cellphones, HPC are real computers. Blackberry are Glorified Palmpilots or Digital Diaries. USELESS!!Read full review...

Bring Back the Handheld PC!

In the world of personal digital assistants, there was one device that stood above the others: the Handheld PC. The Handheld PC is a unique type of PDA with two features that set it apart from other PDAs: 1) a built-in keyboard; and 2) an operating system (Windows CE) that very closely matched the familiar Windows desktop platform.

With an H/PC, you can:
- browse the Web with a wide screen that you don't have to scroll sideways back and forth to read (I can browse comfortably while lying in bed);
- type documents and send them directly to many standard printers;
- read PDF documents, again without the need for horizontal scrolling;
- listen to MP3s;
- view videos;
- create spreadsheets that are easy to read on the screen;
- retrieve, read, and send e-mails;
- record audio messages;
- manage your schedule and to-do lists and set audible reminders;
- manage important contacts, and dial them directly from the H/PC;
- play thousands of games (even many games - and other applications - written for Pocket PCs will work)
and lots more.

The Handheld PC has nearly the full functionality of a Windows notebook computer, with three advantages: 1) lighter weight and smaller size (often much smaller), making them much easier to carry around; 2) instant startup - no waiting minutes for the operating system to boot (it's burned into a ROM chip); and 3) hardware with no moving parts, making it much less vulnerable to wear or overheating. Pocket PCs and Smartphones, with their tiny 320x240 or smaller screens and even tinier thumbboards or on-screen keyboards, just can't measure up to the Handheld PC's wide 640x240 or larger (as high as 800x600) screen and nearly-fullsize QWERTY keyboard.

One of the best Handheld PCs ever made was the Hewlett-Packard Jornada 728. This is a device so small (about 7 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 7/8") that it fits nicely inside a coat pocket, purse, or small handbag; yet it has a keyboard that is surprisingly easy to touch-type on, and a bright, easy-to read screen with 16-bit color (over 65,000 colors). The 728 runs on a 206 MHz StrongARM 1100 processor that's fast and powerful. There are 64 megabytes of internal RAM on which to store applications, and you can also run up to 32 gigabytes of applications from a Compact Flash memory card that you can insert in the Jornada's built-in CF slot. In addition, there's a PCMCIA slot that accommodates hundreds of brands of 16-bit WiFi cards as well as other accessories like adapters for Secure Digital/MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick cards, and even SmartMedia cards. There are pocket versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook pre-installed.

What really sets the Jornada H/PC apart from other PDAs, though, is how far its battery can run on a single charge. The standard 1.5 MAh battery provides up to 9 hours of continuous use. (Compare that to the 1 1/2 - 3 hours you can expect from a notebook computer battery.) And extended batteries are available that can provide up to 20 hours of continuous use. (How many other color PDAs can make that claim?)

I know I sound like a salesman here, but I'm not. I just fell in love with the Jornada 728, and I want lots of people to check out this device for themselves and see if they don't fall in love with it too.
