Required Reading - Explorers Needed.

This book is not just an amazing read. It is, if you take the time and make the effort, it is an immersively gratifying experience. First go find Poe's, (the singer and Daniel's sister), album *Haunted*. It is an amazing companion piece to the book. Also this can be read solo but every time i have read the book, including the first and most special time, it has been with a partner. I could go into all the crazy easter eggs and codes within the book but figuring it all out is part of the journey. Here are a couple of bread crumbs for you, (that i don't think you should go to before hand but maybe after or while you are deep into the book), YouTube channel Pelican Black and Night Mind's video essays are wonderful. There are all many different web sits and IRL documents that you should seek as well. Most of the IRL dicuments can be found as scans on said web sites though. My review ends simply, I am extrodinarily envious of anyone starting this adventure for the first time. I have greatly enjoyed going on this trip with loved ones. The first time was the best time not just because I experienced it with my brother who has since passed, but because it was my first step into this house and i have become one of it's guides over time. Holding the door open for others always gives me a sigular thrill.
Finally, to be brutally honest, and barring his newest series "The Familiar" i have tried very hard to get into Mark's (wait... I called him Daniel above didn't I? Dammit. I cannot scroll up to fix it... Ah well, fornicate it.), other works and they are just... Well... Not for me. I cant disbarrage the man who gave me House Of Leaves no matter how... Not for me, the rest of his work might be.
So stop reading my rambling review and Go! Read the book! Explore the House! Enjoy!

House of Leaves, a unique, one of a kind novel!

Amazing book. It changes the way you read novels, and does to closets what "psycho" did to showers. A great read. Everyone should experience House of Leaves. I wished they would make it into a movie someday!
Basic Story:
A party animal, drug using, tattoo artist finds a novel written by a blind man that died. He types it up to publish and gives the blind man the credit for it. The novel is about a man whos house is larger on the inside than it is on the inside. A closet appears from nowhere and it leads into a vast void dark place that appears to be a mansion within the house. It has stairwells that groan, a spiral staircase that gons down forever, long winding hallways with hundreds of empty rooms, and its all pitch black. They make several trips in there to explore it, and get lost for days at a time.

The books jumps back and forth between the man typing the novel and the novel story itself. The man typing the novel ultimately goes insane himself.

There are end notes, pages printed backwards (need a mirror to read), some parts with one or two words per page, pages with print in sprial form. even the end notes have end notes. Some end notes are 2-10 pages long, they reveal more of the story, so dont skip them! All of the words "house" are printed in blue text.

This is a truely one of a kind book! Anyone who is a fan of the song by "Poe" called "Hey Pretty" will appreciate the book especially on page 88, where the spoken words of her song are printed. MArk Danieleski is Poe's brother! The book he wrote inspired her song! ... Kyrie suggested we go for a drive in her new 2 door BMW coupe...... we slipped into her bucket seats and she took over from there....

I highly suggest this book to anyone over the age of 18. Contains adult language and a lot of adult content. But like I said, its a great book, and well worth the money!

A chilling testament to independent writing

When one things of the Indy genre, they usually think of movies or sometimes computer games, often at which publishing companies would turn up their noses, but one cannot deny that the movement of independent creation is often what drives the wheel of creativity. The independent label can also be applied to unique schools of thought. House of Leaves is a case example of the latter.

It's difficult to classify House of Leaves. At its core, there exists within its universe a movie equivalent to the Blair Witch project, simultaneously claimed to be a factual account of a man's exploration into the paranormal nature of his own home and a mere independent film with some unusually poor storytelling techniques. This movie (called The Navidson Report after its protagonist) is in turn being given an academic review complete with exhibits, footnotes and appendices by a man named Zampanò, which is the actual contents of the book itself. Zampanò laboriously describes and analyzes the contents of the documentary, while his work in yet another layer of storytelling is pieced together and analyzed by another man named Johnny Truant.

You see, Zampanò is missing, and from the remains of the manuscript which is the review of The Navidson Report, his disappearance was violent and driven with the same sheer madness that had apparently infected the victim himself. Truant assembles the manuscript and begins to read and write comments of his own, and so the cycle begins again...

A story within a story within a story, House of Leaves defies genre by simultaneously telling the horror/love story of Navidson as his house warps and attempts to consume him, the horror/abstract/satirical story of Zampanò as he rapidly descends into madness upon viewing the film, and the horror/love/redemption story of Truant as he struggles to make sense of the writing and his own life becomes increasingly shadowy. The only common element between the three layers of storytelling is that something is horribly, horribly wrong with this house.

Just to give you a brief idea of how long this house has been a problem, a notebook was once found on the land which the house would eventually be buried upon, the only remains of an 18th century winter expedition team. The last entry in that notebook: "Ftaires! We have found ftaires!"

Read it, but not in the dark where the minotaur walks.

Compelling and horrifying. A labyrinth circle of footnotes within footnotes within footnotes! Found it very hard to put down. Wonderfully and confusingly great!!!

Excellent

House of Leaves is an excellent mind bending book. The story starts out easy enough but quickly the reader is sucked into the pages trying to make heads or tails of all the information and plot thrown at you in one bundle. If footnotes annoy you, this is most definitely not the book for you. And if you cannot keep multiple storylines alive and well in your head, this may be an extreme challenge. This novel has some of the most different ways of putting text together to create emotions you wouldn't expect. I say give it a go if you truly like suspense with a touch of horror.Read full review...

If you're looking for a different reading experience

Then I highly recommend this book. It may not be for everyone though as it isn't in the usual conventional format.

Nice

I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it came quick. I scrolled through it because the book form is supposed to have some strange ways of writing like layout, which is very important from what I understand, and it was there like it was supposed to be. Very impressed, thank youRead full review...
