Great fun!

A classic which I have given to children for several years. It envisions a boy's newfound freedom from teeth brushing and vegetable eating, features adventure, buried treasure and loud burly manners-free pirate mateys kids love, but things are not really quite that easy, as he finds out.

One caution - I always tell children that though Jeremy Jacob leaves the beach and his family without asking first, they should definitely NOT go off with strangers!

How I Became A Pirate

Liked: Illustrations were excellent and very "kid" oriented. It is a story a child with a good imagination would invent. We loved it. The main reason we purchased this book was due to David Shannon's name. His books are VERY popular with the children, in our area, and we already had all of his books.

Disliked: Nothing. It is an imaginary tale about Pirates and we had no problem with the content.

Jeremy Jacob goes to the beach with his family. While playing in the sand, Jeremy's imagination begins working and invents a wonderful tall tale adventure with a band of pirates. Jeremy's pirates come to shore and befriend Jeremy. After being recruited to help bury the pirate's treasure, Jeremy learns about pirate life. He learns pirate language, pirate manners, pirate "rules" and so forth. At first, Jeremy really liked all the "fun" stuff pirates were able to do like: eat only what they wanted, didn't have to take a bath or brush their teeth and didn't have to go to bed. But, Jeremy also discovered pirates: didn't tuck anyone into bed, read bedtime stories, and didn't give a good-night kiss. Being a pirate wasn't as fun as he thought it would be. After helping the pirates bury their treasure in Jeremy's backyard, the pirates were gone. And, Jeremy was ready to move onto what he really loved doing... playing soccer. This was a very cute book!

Fun title! NOT scary because it is a child on the front

I purchased this book because it was on my Grandson's 1st grade reading list. We are having a jolly time reading it. The library owns a copy but I would rather he owns his own so he can it bring with him when he returns to school. I like that it features a little boy. Many of the younger stories are about animals and girl's topics. A slightly younger child might enjoy it too. There is nothing scary. I am getting him into it completely since I brought the matching stuffed boy pirate that goes with the story. I purchased a pirate pillowcase too. It is a perfect summer read because of all the other kinds of boats out there to compare a pirate ship with. Enjoy.Read full review...

Excellent Author and Illustrator

I purchased this book because we had recently purchased the second book "Pirates Don't Change Diapers". I had not realized this was a second book until I mentioned it to a friend that my 5 year old was really enjoying the book. She mentioned that this author and illustrator had a previous book "How I became a Pirate". This was the only source I could find for this book at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this author and this illustrator. They booth do great work!Read full review...

Marvelous book for any young pirate, just starting out.

Absolutely adorable book for any young pirate. I bought this for my red-headed soccer-playing little 4 yr. old nephew. He's as much of a little pirate as they come! I'm saving for his birthday in June and I have no doubt that he'll love it. Illustrations are excellent as is the narrative. I highly recommend this book for any 4-8 yr. old.
thanks a lot,
