A true story in the Trujillo Era

This movie is based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters in the Trujillo Era in Dominican Republic. My aunt requested that I try to find her the because she couldn't find it in the stores. I had never heard stories from my mother of how it was going up with a tyrant such as Rafael Truillo. I had never heard of the underground movement that had taken place in that era. The Mirabal sisters were very courageous and strong to go up against this government. I really enjoyed this movie because I got a chance to understand how my parents lived growing up and it helps me understand why they left their country so that they can have a better life. Great Story!

This is a fictionalized story about the atrocities of the Dominican dictator Trujillo, The movie was adapted from the respected Dominican poet and writer Julia Alvarez who does a great job of depicting the general conditions and persecution of anybody opposing this ruthless dictator. this movie was based on a novel of actual event that occured in the 1950;s in the caribbean country of the dominican republic. this film has a stunnig performance by selma hayek and magnificent supporting roles by marc anthony and edward james olmos. this is a must-see movie fpr those interested in historical accounts. In the Time of the Butterflies

I'd seen this movie before on vhs a few years back. Love it so much I had to get it on dvd. I don't know much about politics but this movie is a lesson in politics and history. I found it inspiring to see these "delicate butterflies", these sisters able to stand up, to fight for what's morally right. The scenery is beautiful, the acting is excellent and the fact that it's a true story is, well, frightening. Google the historical characters in this movie and you'll really get even better understanding of what took place "in the time of the butterflies". You'll want to watch it again!Read full review...

The movie was based on the lives of the Dominican people in the time of Trujillo. Who was one of the worst dictator the world has ever seen. None of the actors were from the Dominican Republic. The language used was of central american wish killed the movie for me. The movie did not show the rage of the dictator who was a savage killer. The movie jumped fro one scene to another.
